April 27, |96l 8 Pages This Week Published Weekly Five Generations Mrs. LUlie Palmer Kephart of Route 3, Murphy, shown left above, hasoneof the largest families. If not the largest family, of any person In Cherokee County. Mrs. Kephart, born De cember 9, 1874, married Andy Kephart September 16, 1894 and they had nine children. These nine children have had a total of 55 children, as follows: Wiley Kephart, 2 children; Nancy Marcus, 9 children; Edna Sneed, 9 children; Lena Marcus, 13 children; Tom Kephart, 7 children; Hazel J ames, 1 child; Leora Dockery, 5 children; Columbus Kephart, nine children; and Jacob Kephart, deceased, making a total of 55 grand children. These 55 grandchildren have given Mrs. Kephart 89 great grandchildren. They in turn have given her 20 great great grandchildren bringing the grand total to 118. Mrs. Kephart is shown above with five generations of her family at a recent reunion. Clyde Sneed, who gave the Scout the photo, was unable to Identify all those pictured. It seems this family has a hard time remembering names. Wonder why! Tax Reduction Voted For Town of Murphy May Designated Clean Up Month A nine cent per $100 property tax reduction was voted tor residents of the Town of Murphy by the Town Board ?t their last regular meeting, C. E. Johnson, town clerk ?Jiuuuiiieu tuuay. The Board meeting at the Power Building voted unani mously to reduce the Murphy property tax rate from the current $1.76 to a new low of $1.67 for the fiscal year 1961. This makes the second pro perty tax reduction for Murphy residents in the last three years. In 1958, the rate was $1.80. The rate was reduced for the fiscal years 1959 and 1960 to $1.76. The new $1.67 rate is one cent lower than the property asses mien t for Cherokee County which stands at $1.68. C. E. Johnson said certain economy measures would have to be effected for the town to live within this new rate. Some measures have already gone into effect. Others will be an nounced later. In other business, the board authorized Mayor L.L.Mason to make an official request to TV A for use of the McCall Bottom as a baseball diamond. May has been declared clean month for Murphy. The board urges all residents to clean up their yards and buildings. The town garbage and trash truck will be on call during this month only for trash pick up other than the regular visits to homes and businesses. The number to call at theClryHall for a special trash pickup Is VE 7-2510. Remember, May is the only month the trash truck will be available for special pickups. 5th Grade Class Tours Atlanta Miss Emily Sword's 5th grade class left Murphy on Thursday, April 20, at 6:15 a.m. on a chartered bus for Atlanta. They toured thecapi tol building, then went by bus to Stone Mountain, and spent the afternoon atGrant's Park and visiting the Cyclorama. Chamber Meets ANDREWS - The newly or ganized Chamber of Commer ce held their first dinner meeting Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. Mrs. Howell correctly identified last week's picture as the old Baptist School, a home (old Nelson home) and a hospital (Petrle Hospital and now the Providence Hospital) located on Peachtree Street. Wagon Train Committees Named; Plans Announced Co-chairmen and commit tees for the 1961 Wagon Train celebration have been announ ced. Ban Palmer, Murphy motel operator and .Holland McSwain, Murphy City Schools Superintendent, will serve as co-chairmen of this year's 4th of July event. Tentative plana for the ?'snt have already been worked out. The celebration will begin In Telllco Plains, Tennessee on Saturday, July 1 with square dancing, music and public speaking. The Wagon Train will start across the moun tains early Sunday morning, July 2 and proceed to the first camp alts near the Tel llco River. On Monday, July 3, the train will move on within 10 or 12 miles of Mur phy and camp the second night. This 1* the first time In the history of the Wagon Train that two nights will be spent in making the trip. Low 55. Rain 0. .. Intruder Takes Pot Shot At County Man SBI Agent M. G. Crawford vas called to the home of Paul Lance on the Bluirs Ttlle Highway arour-d 8:45 p. m. Saturday night to investi gate a shooting Incident. Lance told law officers that he heard someone come to the door and knock. He went around to the back thinking It was somebody stealing gas. He didn't see anything so he returned to bed. The person came again to die door and this time knocked the door in. As Lance jumped to his feet, the unidentified person pulled apistol and fired a shot at Lance. The shot went wild, the bullet going over Lance's head and lodging in the bathroom wall.
