HOSPITAL GRANTS - On July 8th I attended dedication cermonies of the new Charles A. Cannon, Jr. Memorial Hispital at Banner Elk, North Carolina. This magnificent hospital which is appropriately named in honor of Lt Charles A. Cannon, Jr., who died for our country in World War II, will render services of ln calculabel value to the people of that area. Its construction and equipment was made possible by gifts from the family and friends of the late Lt. Cannon, grants from the Duke Foundation, and grants from the Federal government under the Hill -Burton Act of 1946. At the end of World Warll on August 13, 1946, Congress through this Act began assisting community hospitals in North Carolina, and throughout the Nation. Since the inception of the program through May 31. 1961, Hill-Burton grants to North Carolina hospitals and medical facilities have totaled $65,775,353 for 333 projects costing $159,186,570. The total Hill-Burton federal grants for the entire country amounted to $1,527,658,325 over the same period for 5652 hospital and medical facilities Eleven hospital and nursing home construction grants have been approvedforNorthCaro lina during the first five months of 1961. The funds from one of these eleven grants will be used for new facilities at the Rehabilitation Center for theBlindatButner, North Carolina. As of May 31 1961 of the 333 hospital and medical facility projects which have been approved for North Carolina under this pro gram, 272 are lnoperation, 53 are under construction, and 8 have receive initial approval. 122 North Carolina com munities and cities are bene fiting from the program. Improvements Made To Cherokee County Roads Improvements were made to more tlian 50 miles of roads last month in the Fourteenth Highway Division, according to a progress report from Division Engineer F. L. Hutchison. In Cherokee County, the following roads were streng thened: 0.5 mile of Tomotla Road-(#1373); 0.4 mile of Mc gurie Road (#1532); 0.3 mile of Sunny Point Road (#1116); 0.5 mile of Mid-Way Lake Road (#1560); 1 mile ofHedden Road (#1580); 0.3 mile of Crow Road (#1152); and on 0.3 mile of Long Branch Road (#1526). Also in Cherokee , split seal retreatment was completed on 2.13 miles of US 64, from the Clay County line toroad#1519; on 8.80 miles of road #1556, old US 19, from US 64 to US 129; on 2.40 miles of road #1326, Joe Brown, from road #1331 to Valley River Bridge: and on 2.13 miles of road #1381, from IS 19 and US 129 to road #1379. Frazier an nounced this week Mr. Hamilton, who was graduated from Andrews High School in 1944, received his Bachelor of Science degree at Western Carolina College and Master of Arts degree at George Pea body College in Nashville, Tennessee. Cooper Resigns Coach Bob Cooper, who re signed from Andrews' school staff this past week has been appointed backfield coach at Western Carolina College for the 1961 -62 season. Cooper will work under the direction of head coacn Dan Robinson. "Bob is one of the most outstanding football players ever to play at WCC, and I think he has ever pos sibility of developing into an equally outstanding coach." Robinson said.
