Thursday, September 20, 1976 SAGA Head Addresses Pembroke Kiwanis Libroty Week for Minorities Sept. 19-27 President Jerry Juren open ed the Tuesday evenine r-“et- ing of the Pembroke Kiwanis Club at Sim’s Restaurant. Charles Griffith. Program Chairman for the evening, introduced Mr. Robert Max well, Manager of the PSU Cafeteria for Saga Food'Ser vice. Mr. Maxwell noted that the name Saga comes from the Indian name Kanadesaga which was their name for what is now the city of Geneva, New York. It was in Geneva that Saga began its operations in 1948 operating food service for teh students at Hobart Coll ege. Today, Saga Food Service provides for 620 educational institutions,in the U. S. and Canada. 200 businesses and industries, and 80 health care centers. In addition Saga Enterprises operates 220 Straw Hat Pizza Parlors. 50 Stuart Anderson. 30 Velvet Turtles, and 50 Refectorys. The combined SFS and Saga Enterprises employs 30.000 people in 1,250 different units. Saga is listed on the N. Y. Stock Exchange at $13 with .07 dividends. facilities and receives a per centage ofthe$215which each students pays per semester for his meals. The price of meals has increased $7 to the student over the last three years representing a 3 percent in crease. During the same period of time labor and food prices have increased l5~percent due to inflation. Food service is a people- oriented business. At PSU Mr.Maxwellhas 50 part and full time employees in the cafeteria. It is impossible to please all the people at every meal, but if 75% are satisfied you are succeeding. Each day brings its challenges and that is what makes the business so interesting. At the business meeting which followed. President Ju ren announced that Charley Walters is a patient at S.E. General Hospital for some tests. Eddie Mac Locklear announced that the Annual Report will be made at next Tuesday’s meeting. Jim Paul spoke of his trip with the PSU Cross Country Team to the Meet at Stone Mountain, Georgia in which PSU took second place. President Juren announced that next Tuesday would be his last meeting as President of the Club. Poqe 9, The Caroliiio l:,dion Voice across the MAYOR’S DESK With REGGLE STRICKLAND The observance of Library Week for Minorities, Sept. 19-27, and in cooperation with the Governor’s Task Force on Reading, the Learning Institu te of North Carolina, and the Robeson County Task Force vm Reading, the Fairgrove School Media Center is spon soring a special bock exhibit of Native American Literature and Black History. Study prints, recordings, filmstrips and media kits are also on display in the school media center for this week. Additionally, a book fair is being sponsored bv the Fair- grove scnool Club in an effort to encourage students to pur chase books for their home libraries. Books are available in the areas of Easy Reading. Jokes and Riddles, Animals. Science and History, Sports, Arts. Classic Hard Backs. Fiction, Fiction Adventure, Non- Fiction, Activities and Posters. Bibliographies of Native American Literature and Black Literature have been prepared for distribution to students as they visit the Book Fair, for their individual use and future reference. The councilman attempted to talk her out of it and praised the gracious clerk to the high heavens. The council accepted her resignation with regret and instructed her to come back if and when she could or would. The council also discussed paving and guttering and curbing Pine Street, accepted the employment of-Robert Locklear as the new town policeman, and gave Chief of Police, Vernon Oxendine. permission to erect warning signs instructing the citizens of Pern broke that Pembroke in the future will be monitored by radar.
