Pembroke Kiwanis Club met
at Sims Restaurant on Tuesday
evening, October 26th, with
President Bernard Lowry pre
siding. The invocation was
given by Theodore Maynor
and Club singing was led by
Bernard Lowry.
A letter from the Pembroke
Recreation Commission was
read by President Lowry in
which appreciation was ex
pressed for the generous do
nations provided the Commis
sion by the Kiwanis Club.
“Your generosity is presently
evident by the uniforms our
football players are wearing
every Tuesday night at Lowry
Park in Pembroke. However,
the true reward of your
kindness is to be found in the
building of character, sports
manship. competitiveness,
and moral values derived by
the youth from being a part of
a team effort. The equipment
you have helped provide will
strengthen the.se iraits m our
youth for years uncountable.”
Signed by Wade C Hunt,
representing the Pembroke
Recreation Commission.
Guest speaker at the meet
ing was Ronnie Chavis. Base
ball Coach at Pembroke High
School. Coach Chavis is a 1972
graduate of Pembroke State
University where he was an
outstanding pitcher for the
Varsity Baseball Team. Since
graduation he has been coach
ing baseball at Pembroke
Senior High School and his
team records during these past
three years are 60 games won
and only 19 lost. Last year the
PHS baseball team finished
3rd in the State and 9 of its
players are now in college on
baseball scholarships.
Coach Chavis is a firm
believer in the value of base
ball in keeping young men
conscious of the importance of
physical fitness and in build
ing character and pride in their
developing abilities. A young
man involved in sports does
not have the time nor the
inclination to get into trouble.
At present there is; an
urgent need for $1000 to
purchase 25 baseball uni
forms. Last year five boys had
to be cut from the team due to
lack of enough uniforms. The
team is conducting car washes
selling candy, selling pro
grams at athletic events, and
many other activities in trying

to reach their $1000 goal. The
order for these uniforms must
be placed by November 15th if
they are to arrive in time for the
opening of te 1977 Baseball
Season.
Pembroke Kiwanis mem
bers responded by presenting
Coach Chavis with $100 for the
Uniform Fund.

Kiwanis Club will meet at the
