INSIDE TVjS, CONFIDENTUL REPORT: Telly Savalas’ love affair with the City of New York has gone quite beyond his returning to New York to film nine more episodesofhis'‘Kojak” series for television. In addition to his TV commitments here, the bald-headed lover also has selected New York as the site for nightclub, motion pictures and record dates. In early January, he will begin to film his next movie "Theo Mati” in the Big Apple. It’s based on his own script about a gent who sells his soul to the devil, a beautiful woman. And, he said, following a wild Greek hankderchief dance at Sirocco, he will also record an album of love songs sometime in Janu ary at a Manhattan studio for his MCA Records label.. Ac tress Ellen Corby, who plays the grandmother in the televi sion series "The Waltons” has been removed from the critical list at a Los Angeles hospital. Ms. Corby, 63, who is recov ering from a stroke, is now listed in fair condition. Doctors still don’t know how long she'll be hospitalized... Seen raking leaves in his Connecticut back yard in a Teacher’s Scotch T-shirt: George C. Scott... Danny Thomas, whose NBC series “The Practice” should be right at home on the "family hour” of television viewing, thinks the whole concept of the hour is hypocri tical. Not one to mince words, Danny uses terms like "Ho kum” and “bunk” to describe the great experiment that is supposed to protect the shell like ears and innocent eyes of children from the more brutal excesses of the 21-inch screen. "AM the ‘family hour’ does is keep the kids up long after they should be in bed,” Danny says. "They stay up long after they should be in bed. suffer ing through the family hour so they can watch the shows that offer them plenty of violence and whatever sex is being shown, It’s turning the kids into insomniacs, that’s all.” ...Marlene Dietrich was seen sipping Hennessy and soda in a Lincoln limousine in mid- Manhattan... ! INSIDE THE TUBE: The star of the popular television series "Chico and the Man” was charged with driving a car under the influence of drugs. Freddie Prinze, 22, was arres ted earlier this month by a highway patrol officer who said he observed the actor driving erractically along the San Diego Freeway. The offic- ;r found a prescription bottle :ontaining tranquilizers in Prinze’s shirt pocket...Kirk Douglas, who will star later his seaosn on NBC’s big "The vloneychangers,’’ which is jased on the BANTAM BOOK japerback by Arthur Hailey, oves it when Frank Gorshin mpersonates him. Douglas says he was once watching jorshin do his Kirk Douglas mpersonation on television ■vith one of his sons. "Dad.” :he boy said, “he’s doing you much better than you do.”,... Sudden success on television is endangering the marriage of ;he Captain and Tennille. “We jsed to make music for the fun :>f it," says Toni Tennille. "But now we do it on schedule, five days a week, whether we are in the mood for it or not, almost like robots. When we first got the show, we through everything would be rosy from then on. We had no idea it could be such a burden on our relationship. I never though I’d say this, but the television show is spoiling our marriage.” Already the Captain (Daryl Dragon) and Tennille are being compared to Sonny and Cher, which disturbs Toni. "I read such unfair things,” she told me, “like Daryi is supposed to be eighter dumb or a moron and like I'm the only talent in the family and I want to use it and someday dump the Captain and become a star in my c right.” As for the Captain, he is far from being the silent partner he sometimes appears to be on the show. He’s naturally quiet, thoughful and possessed of an analytical turn of mind. "The good thing about the show,” he told me, "is that is lets us be ourselves. Toni’s just naturally outgoing and although she is not bossy, she has a tendency to get her own way. 1 don’t need the ego buildup and I’m content to stay in the background and take care of things Toni doesn’t like, such as the business end, ratings’ figures and dealing with brass,” Toni said, “We still live the same way we used to but in a smaller time frame. We still have the very same friends, since we don’t believe fame ought to swell a person’s head, but we’ve also got many new friends. Some are sincere. Some aren’t...” If you’ve been cooking with sherry, table wines and brandy, cooking with Scotch is a natural step up. Please note that heating drives off the alcohol and calories in whisky, leaving only the tantalizing scents and flavor of the spirit in the finished dish. A good Scotch to use is Johnnie Walker Red... POUNDING THE TV BEAT: Starsky and Hutch, the crime busting heroes of the ABC television series, may be all buddy-buddy on the screen, but off, it’s all snarl, snarl. In fact, success has so spoiled the pair that the set is closed to all except the immediate cast and the film crew, so that word of their tempermental behavior doesn’t get around. “Those two have become spoiled roften,’’ a female assistant to the producer told me. "When they come to the show, Paul- Michael Glaser (Starsky) has had a small part in the movie version of "Fiddler on the Roof.” David Soul (Hutch) was best known as the middle man brother in "Here Comes the Brides.” But the way they act now, you’d think they were God’s gift to televison. They not only grouse at each other, but they act moody with the rest of the cast and crew.” An ABC executive was also an noyed at the stars’ prima donna behavior. "It’s too bad that stars sometimes behave as if they were irreplaceable. They forget that without the show and the network they’d still be unknowns.” The "Speakeasy Band” in the "Bugsy Malone” film musical was made up of members of the ^British National Youth Jazz Orschestra. Their leader, Bill Ashton, a stickler for accuracy, broke down the playback tapes into musical parts so that the musicians were visually abso lutely truthful to the pre- recordings and not just min ing. "Bugsy Malone" is based on the paper back published by BANTAM BOOKS... TV TICKER: Here’s a tooth some twosome: Debralee Scott the cute little sexpot of “Mary Hartman” and Fonz Henry Winkler- together at a recent late night session at the Improv, a much favored Holly wood nightspot..'A United Air lines stewardess reports that one of her first-class passen gers treated the entire roach section to Gordon’s Gin and never revealed his name..For a few taping session, Mary Kay Place had to hide a bandaged right hand from the cameras on "Mary Hartman.” She cut the hand when a jar she was opening broke into splinters. EYE ON TV: "The $128,000 Question” has a slight editing problem with its newest con testant, a clergyman whose category is human sexuality. He is using some words that have never been heard on the home screen before, and al though they are all clinical terms, VIACOM feels they are not acceptable family viewing. ...The joke, it turns out, is on 'M*A*S*H*’s' Mike Farrell. The show’s tall. No. 2 doctor funnyman firmly made up his mind years ago not to become an actor-never mind a star. But that’s how it has turned out. After a somewhat shakey start as Wayne Roberts’ re- ■ placement, Farrell, playing B. J. Hunnicutt, has developed into a first rate sidekick for No. 1 funnyman, Alan Alda. Still, after growing up in Hollywood going to high school in Holly wood and mixing with all those rich Hollywood kids, becoming a Hollywood star is the last thing Farrell wanted. ‘‘1 thought that if I ever did any thing in the movie business, I would be a carpenter like my father,” he explained. "But when I realized I didn’t have his skill, I gave up.”.... Decon Scott, George C.’s little girl, has grown up, so look out Hollywood. Already, some people are saying she has her "old man’s” tremendous ta lent, minus only his equally tremendous temper, Devon plays the daugher, Roberta Franklin, on the new "Tony Randall Show.’’...Oil combi nation toasting each other other Boodles, the worlds’ costiliest gin, at the Bijou Restaurant the other day: Barbara Walters and Tom Brokaw...
