Georgia visited for a few days in the homes of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie H. Oxendine and Mr. and Mrs. William E. Pate. They also visited with Mrs. Oxendine’s sister Dr. Mary Pate Hardin in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bazie Hardin of Welton Street. Evangelist Billy Graham has scheduled a crusade to be held March 23 through 27th at the Civic Auditorium of Downtown Ashville, N.C. The arena will seat 7,500 persons and the message will be piped by closed circuit television into Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. If necessary, another 2.000 per sons can be accommodated in the center’s exhibition level just beneath the arena. It was in the latter part of 1973 that a delegation from Ashville’s Bla ch Churches, led by the Rev. Dr. John White of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, visited with Billy at his Mon- treat, N.C. home and discuss ed a crusade to be held in Ashville. The Rev. John Hicks, Director of the missions for the Baptist Church Association of Buncombe, chaired the Ash- ville Crusade. The public is invited to make plans and attend this special event. Mrs. Myrte Woodell, Mrs. Sylvia Webster, Mrs. Myrtle Jacobs, Mrs. Johnny Dial and children Amy, Jamie and Pernell of Greenville, N.C., Mrs. Jerry Cabaniss of Charleston, S.C., Miss Gwendolyn Locklear of Gastonia and Miss Darlene Dial. The honoree received many lovely gifts. Mrs. Ada Bell Lowry of Lumberton and her daughter Betty of Statesboro. Georgia. Mr, and Mrs. Andrew Lock lear and family of Gastonia, spent the past weekend visit ing in the homes of Mr. Locklear’s mother Mrs. Willie Locklear and his sister Miss Pearlie Locklear of Manor Street, and Mrs. Locklear’s parents Mr, and Mrs. George Dial and family of Chavis Street. The Gideon International Goldsboro Camp held a Pas tor’s Banquet for all the local pastors of the area beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Febru ary 19th and was held at the Holiday Inn of Goldsboro. The guest speaker was Mr. Gar land Tucker. Attending from Pembroke werei Mr. and Mrs. John A. Smith and Mr. Earlie B. Maynor. Among those who attended from Lumberton we re: Mr. and Mrs. George Green. Also present for the occasion was a former pastor of the Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Rev. Ralston Butler of Goldsboro. Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Maynor are members of the Laurinburg Gideon Camp. Grant Maynor, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Locklear, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Oxendine. Mrs. Molly Jacobs and Mrs. Rober ta Locklear, all of the Union Chapel area, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Locklear. Mr, and Mrs. Ray Locklear and Mr. and Ms. Jerry Jacobs, all of the Lum berton community, Mr. and Mrs. David Hunt and Mr. and Mrs. John Ander Scott of Saint Pauls, and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Mac Jacobs of Hope Mills. The honoree received many gifts including cash gifts and many good wishes for many more happy birthdays. February Mrs. Phillip Ray Locklear was honored Saturday night with a baby shower given by her sister Mrs. Monie Ruth Scott and was held at the Union Chapel Community Church. A large number of relatives and friends attended and showered Mrs. Locklear with lovely baby gifts. After a period of games were played, refreshments were served to the guests by the hostess, Mrs. Scott, after which the group enjoyed a social hour. Mr. Earlie B. May nor, for the Adult Bible Sunday School Class at Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church Mr. Luther Chavis was the substitute teacher the past Sunday. Mrs. Jessie Maynor return ed home Saturday from Tam pa, Florida where she spent her winter vacation visiting in the homes of her sister Mrs. Mary C. Smith and their brother Mr. Roland Smith, also other relatives. Mr. Smith has recently returned home from the hospital, where he was hospitalized due to having broken his hip. He is reported to be improving satisfactorily and is able to walk some. Mr. Calvin Revels is a treatment patient at the Scot land Memorial Hospital at Laurinburg. The Rev. Dawley Maynor was in the past week due to having the flu. Rev. Maynor was able to be out some as of Monday. A large number of persons from the Pembroke area at tended the funeral services held Sunday, February 20th at 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Grove Holiness Church for: Shenell Locklear, age 4; Rachel Lock lear, age 3; and Dora Etta Locklear, age 2. All were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Landis Lee Locklear. And for Amanda Woods and Amy Woods, age 1 year, twin daughters of Jimmy Woods. Officiating ministers were the Rev. Grover Oxendine and the Rev. Roy Maynor. We at the Carolina Indian Voice extend out heartbelt sympathy to the families. Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Hard in and Mr. J. Ben Hardin of Chapel Hill spent the past weekend visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bazie Hardin and Mrs. Hardin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Pate. The conference was held Feb. 17-18 at Bordeaux Motor Inn in Fayetteville. It was sponsored by the State De partment of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Council for Social Studies. Highlight ing the them “Education for Global Citizenship.’’ Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Brooks were hosts Saturday evening at a party for their son, Vester’s ■ second birthday and was held at their home. After the guest enjoyed playing several games, refreshments were served to Jo Della Locklear, Jamie Brooks. Donna Lynn Thames, Floyd Locklear and Jerry Lynn Bell. The honoree received many gifts. The conference included teaching demonstrations, dis cussions, curriculum materials displays as well as several special two and one-half hour and three hour workshops focusing on topics of interest to all concerned with the teaching of social studies in grades K-12. Mrs. Dale Finlaw, of Fay- ettiville, spent the past week end visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Dial and family of Charlotte. A gift of money was donated Sunday to the Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church •by -Mr. and Mrs. Edward ‘,’Ma'ynor of Gree’nsboro and Mr. Gerel Locklear was honored Saturday evening, February 19th, with a surprise supper for his 49th birthday, given by his wife Mrs. Doris Evelyn Locklear and their chidren Kim and Ronald of the home, Mr, and Mrs. Donald Locklear, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Locklear and Mr. and Mrs. Winford Oxendine. The event was held at the Locklear’s home. Prayer was offered at the evening meal by Mr. Grant Maynor. Guests other than mentioned above were Mrs. In the Pembroke News Thursday, Feb. 17, the name of Mrs. Jessie B. Chavis was omitted from the list of relatives and friends that held a welcome home luncheon for First Sgt. Leslie Chavis and his family. Mrs. Chavis is the mother of Sgt. Chavis. Special emphasis was given on both days to the teaching of reading in the social studies program at all levels. Other sessions covered a wide range of demonstrations of instruc tional techniques. Presenta tions were made by several consultants from the State Department of Public Instruc tion as well as by visiting consultants from colleges and universities in the United States. And in the write up of the baby shower held for Crystal Gail Locklear, four weeks old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Locklear, the shower was not given by Mrs. Lock lear, but by her friends and co workers at the A.C.M.E. Elec tric Corp. of Lumberton and the shower was held Monday, Feb. 14th.
