Ronnie Chavis, bom and reared ii area, who played baseball in high school in the Pembroke area, attended and played with the best teams his hometown university ever put out, is now back home and coaching perhaps the top teams his school has ever produced. ■‘Strike at the Wind!,” an outdoor drama in Pembroke, has just released an original soundtrack recording from the show, according to General Manager Rock Kershkw. They were Debbie Ann Lockleor and Eric G. Odom. Chavis, who has led his Pembroke Senior High School Warrior baseball nines to Three Rivers 3-A Conference double championships the past two seasons. That is. they won both the regular season and the tournament titles in the TRC in both 1976 and 1977. Second runners-up were from Mrs. Debro J. Deese's first and second grode doss, Cheryl L Chavis ond Mork Epps. ‘-'’fcw "Strike at the Wind!” is the story of the Lumbee Indians and their folk hero, Henry Berry Lowrie following the Civil War. Last year over 17,000 persons saw •’Strike at the Wind!” which, according to the Institute of Outdoor Drama of Chape! Hill, made it the most successful new drama in the nation. The progrom consisted of a variety of folk ond square dances from each doss. Spedal guests were the Swinging Squores from Prospect School, with Mr. Stocy Droyboy, director. And, Ronnie has just been voted the Three Rivers 3-A Conference Baseball "Coach Of The Year” for the second year in a row! MT. Sampson, Sr. Proprietor PEMBROKE — The fourth annual Pembroke State University open tennis tournament for both men and women will be held here June 13-19. The tourney, directed by Ken Johnson, PSU tennis coach, will include men’s and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles and a special 35- and-older men’s singles and doubles. In addition there will be age group competition for boys and girls 12-and-under, 14-and- under, 16-and-under and 1ft- and-under. Deadline for entries is June 9. Mr. Erwin (Hes) Locklear has moved in this community after living in Florida for 23 years. Mrs. Stella Lockleor is still confined to her home. She was visited on Monday by Mrs. Rockie Jane Locklear, Mrs. Nancy Jones ond Mrs. Violet Locklear and gronddoughter. Her condition is fair. Ronnie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Chavis Pembroke, Route I and he attended Prospect High School where he played basketball and baseball; then attended Pembroke State University in 1968-72, receiving a BS degree in physical education with a minor in biology. While at Pembroke State he played on one of the most famous teams the University there has ever fielded; the 1970 club that was the first in the school's historyever to wina berth in the NAIA championship Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. Great Record CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Mbs Evangeline Lockleor celebrated her 20th blrthdoy ot the home of her mother, Mrs. Annie Ruth Lockleor. All of her brothers and sbiters were present ond o host of relatives ond friends. They served all kinds of different foods. She received o lot of gifts, plus Q donation of one hundred dollars and five dollars, being handicapped, oil her life. Somedoy she will Mrs. Coro Mocy Jones is o patient ot Southeastern Generol Hospital where she under went surgery on Monday. We hope her o speedy recovery. Chavis was the Braves’ leading pitcher on the championship team, hurling at a 9-3 record clip; a school record that was broken the following year when Ron Norman won 10, lost 2 for the returning team to the NAIA finals. Chavis' overall record at PSU was 20-6. One of his greatest memories was that he beat Fairmont State from West Virginia, 6-1 in 1970 to clinch the Area 6 Title that gave his Braves a national berth. His current club has a chance to enlarge on that record as it now enters the State 3-A playoffs against Clinton, the East Central 3-A Conference winner this week. By the year, his Warriors’ records are; 1974-14-7; 1975-15-8; 1976-22-3. This year his charges are 20-2 as they enter the state playoffs. i' ‘V Chavis’ teams have been at least as far as the finals of (he TRC tourney since he started coaching; losing to West Brunswick in 1974; bowing to Richlands, the ECFC champ, in the first round of playoffs in 1975 and, last year, went to the Eastern finals before losing to Wiliiamston. WEST BRUNSWICK HIGH SCHOOL-The 4ih annual Three Rivers Athletic Banquet was held Monday night at West Brunswick High School. Conference members are Pembroke, East Bladen, West Brunswick, West Columbus, and Whiteville High Schools. Fairmont High School will join the conference next year. Mr. Carlton Prince, principal of Whiteville High School, and president of the conference presided. He interlaced his statistical remarks with a number of his patented ‘‘funny stories.” The overall News Reporter Excellency Trophy was won by West Brunswick High School, Pembroke was represented by a number of All Conference selections, including ali Conference Cheerleader, Brenda Hunt; Chrissa Dial and Darcy Oxendine. All Conference Girl’s Softball; Michael Locklear and Jeff Maynor. They are slated to play Clinton in opening round play in the state 3-A Tournament. The game was scheduled for last Tuesday might but has been rescheduled because of the torrential rains of the last few days. The date of the game is to be announced The Pembroke softballers (girls) also surprised the experts bv winning the Three Rivers Tournament. ’ And, of course, the popular choices of Ronnie Chavis (baseball) and John W.
