Lumbee Homecoming, the annual
gathering of the Lumbee, has a little
something for everyone.
A plethora of activities are planned,
according to Kenneth Maynor, Executive
Director of Lumbee Regional Development
Association (LRDA), the sponsoring
agency for the annual weekend of fun and
games beginning today,
THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 1977
Activities include an appearance by the
Golden Knights Parachute Team at
Pembroke Senior High School today at 5
p.m. and the crowd pleasing favorite. Little
Miss Lumbee Pageant at 5:30 p.m. at
PSU’s Moore Hall. Tonight at 8 p.m. the
Lumbees honor their own. Awards to be
presented are The Henry Berry Lowry
Memorial Aword, the Dbtin9uished
Service Aword and The Businessman of
file Yeor Aword. Banquet speaker will be
Helen Movnor Schlerbeck, a native of
oleson County and the daughter of the late
Lacy Maynor and Mrs. Sallie Revels
Maynor of Pembroke. Acknowledged as an
expert concerning Indian Education, Ms.
Schierbeck is presently finishing up the
requirements for Ed. D. in Administration
at Virginia Polytechnical Institute.

vying-for the coveted crown. Miss Lumbee
1977. Mbs Lumbee 1977 will be
crowned by Undo Loddeor, Mbs Lumbee
1976 who recently made a favorable
impression while appearing as a contestant
in the Miss North Carolina Pageant in
Winston-Salem. The Miss Lumbee Pageant
will be held in the spacious and modem

A coronation ball will follow at the
Pembroke Jaycee Hut beginning at 10:50
p.m.
SATURDAY', JULY 2. 1977
Saturday is a nice day for a parade and
Lumbee Homecoming will showcase a
caravan of floats, pretty girls, politicians,
clowns, etc. at the Homecoming Porode
through downtown Pembroke. The parade
begins at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at
the LRDA Annex. Later in the afternoon,
beginning at 2 p.m. field day octMties
will take place in the Pembroke Town Park.
Also, there will be exhibits of Creofive
Writing ond Art Exhibits at the LRDA
Annex Building all afternoon.
Saturday night is Pow Wow night at
Pembroke Senior High School. Indian
dancing, singing, camaraderie and old
fashioned rapping will prevail.
Old Foshioned Gospel Sing at the
Lakeside Amphitheatre at the Riverside
Country Club in the Red Banks
Community. The Gospel Sing, held on the
site of Strike at the Wind will begin at 7
p.m.
As Maynor said, “Homecoming has a
little something for everyone.”

Gerald Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. James
L. Hunt of Route 2, Pembroke, recently
received the silver wings of an Army
aviator and was appointed a warrant officer
upon completion of the rotary wing
aviator course at the U.S. Army Aviation
School, Fr. Rucker, Ala.
The course provided training in leadership
and helicopter flying techniques as well as
instrument flight.
W.O. Huntwas an honor graduate of the
course. He entered the Army last
November. He is a 1967 graduate of
Pembroke High School. His wife, Mary
. Ellen, lived in Daleville, Ala. during his
training.

DONNER HIRED AS ASSISTANT
SUPT. OF ROBESON SCHOOLS
The Robeson County Board of Education
met in a special called meeting on Tuesday.
June 28, for the purpose of hiring Mr.
Donald A. Bonner as assistant
superintendent. Purnell Swett.
superintendent, made the
recommendations. Prior to his
recommendation he explained that the
superintendent had the option of hiring an
associate or an assistant. He explained the
differnce in the two. He said that in order
for a person to be an associate
superintendent he should have a
superintendency certificate.
The board approved the hiring of Bonner
who will work in conjunction with the two
assistant superintendents there, Mr. Albert
C. Hunt and Mr. J. C. Humphrey.

recommendations for the following

Purvis School will become principal of Bonner. No action was taken on
Green Grove/Hilly Branch School principal for Purvis School,

COUNTY TAX RATE SET AT SI.15 PER
S100 VALUATION
The Robeson County Board of
Commissioners officially adopted the
1977-78 budget Monday night at their
regular Monday night meeting.
The tax rate was set at SI. 15 per SlOO
valuation, a 5 percent decrease from the last
fiscal year.
REVIVAL PLANNED AT BEAR SWAMP
BAPTIST CHURCH
Revival services will be held at Bear
Swamp Baptist Church, beginning Sunday
night at 7:30 p.m. Services will continue
through Friday night. Rev. Mike
Cummings and Rev. Douglas Mitchell will
be guest speakers. Rev. Mitchell will speak
on Sunday night. Rev. T. M. Swell is
pastor of Bear Swamp Baptist Church, and
he extends a cordial invitation to everyone
to join him in these services. Services begin
nightly at 7:30 p.m.
FATHER'S DAY AT GREEN PINE CHURCH
All the fathers of Green Pine Church were
honored on Father’s Day. Each father was
presented a rose bud by his daughter or son
or grandchild. Each father also received a
small cross as a gift and as a reminder that
Jesus died for their sins.
A special Vacation Bible School program
was given in honor of the fathers. The
children sang songs, recited poems. A
flanni*! board story entitled, "The Five
Loaves and Two Fishes’ ’ was demonstrated
by Mrs. Barbara Brayboy.
CLASS REUNION PLANNED FOR
PROSPEa HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF '67
Prospect High School’s Class of 1967 will
hold their class reunion on Saturday night,
July 2. 1977 at Town and Country
Restaurant in Pembroke, beginning at 7:.^0
p.m. The cost will be SI2,00 per couple
and mav be paid at the door.

During the past six weeks, Indian parents
across Robeson County have had an
opportunity to make specific
recommendations on the types of
educational programs which they feel are
needed to meet the needs of Indian students
in Robeson County. The process began
with a Robeson County Indian
Educorion Needs Assessment which was
computerized and the results made known
to the 40-member Indian Education Parent
Committee and through a series of eight
Public School District Hearings throughout
the county.
At a meeting of the Indian Education
Parent Committee on Tuesday night, June
28th, several Indian parents observed the
Committee review andapprovea proposal
project application which has been
developed by Ms. Ruth Dial Woods. lEA
Program Consultant for the 1977-78 Title
IV-A Indian Education Project in the
Robeson County Schools. Programs which
received a rating of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
priority through school district
prioritization at the public hearings were
Cultural Enrichment; Educational
Enrichment for accelerated students and
reading enrichment tutorial services; and
youth development and Individual
awareness programs for Indian students.
All schools in the Robeson County School
System will implement these three program
components. A pilot program in Native
American Studies focusing on local
Indian history and culture will be
conducted in Rex-Rennert, Parklon. Piney
Grove, Magnolia. Ashpole, Rowland and
Southside Schools. A Health Services
Component to provide dental services and
emergency medical services will also be
conducted in all of the schools for Indian
students.
The initial project application filed in
February was not approved by the U.S.
Office of Education, and as part of a
Memorandum of Agreement between
the Robeson County Board of
Education, the Indian Education Parent
Advisory Committee, and the Title
IV-A Project administration, the FY 77
project is to be centralized with an
administrative stafff in the central
office at Lumberton. The amount of the
Grant Award for the FY 77 Title IV-A
