Amid charge* and counter charge*,
leaflets, (late*, etc. Pembroke went to the
poll* Tueiday and named their choice* to
head Pembroke'i town government.
Incumbent Mayor Reggie Strickland
swamped his opposition to win another
term as mayor. He polled 275 votes to
easily out distance former mayor Garlic
Maynor who polled 103 votes and Simeon
Oxendine, a member of the Robeson
County Board of Education with 159 The
mayor's term is for two years.
Lawry and Nevtts an Caoad
Two incumbent council men-Lee Neville
and Monroe Lowry-were toppled in a
crowded council race. 13 candidates vied
for 4 seats, with the two top'Vote getters
receiving four year terms and the two next
high vote getters receiving two year terms.
Newcomer Larry T. Brooks, who works
with special services at Pembroke Slate
University, led the pack with 270 votes He
was followed by incumbent Milton Hum, s
sheetrock contractor, with 246 votes
Bob Brewington, a self employed
businessman, surprised the pollsters by
finishing third in the balloting with 238
votes. Incumbent Sam Dial finished fourth
with 227 votes. Brooks and Hunt will serve
four year terms, Brewington and Dial will
serve two year terms.
Bloc voting signaling disfavor with the
preponderance of low rent housing in
Pembroke did not materialize Brewington
was the only candidate who identified with
those opposed to a proposed 100 additional
housing units in Pembroke who fared well
in the balloting.
Other vote totals were: Lee Neville, I87?
A G. Dial, 170; Samuel Kerns, 149;
Monroe Lowry, 123; Ira Pate Lowry, 122;
Lae Ruth Sampson Mabe, 113; James E.
Bell, 77; William Lloyd Hunt, 52; William
F. Paul, 17

Pembroke Elections
Bob Brcwington, who won a scat on (he
Pembroke Town Council, in Tuesday's
balloting, appeared before the Chairman of
the Robeson County Board of Elections,
Rev Charles McDowell, Monday to level
charges against other candidates in
Pembroke's municipal election
Brewington charged that residents of
Pembroke's housing authority had been
threatened with eviction if they did not vote
for a certain slate of candidates. According
to news reports, Brewington also said it had
been brought to his attention that Clinton
Thomas, Jr., housing authority director,
had bought, marked and distributed some
300 sample ballots.
Brewington also accused Ed Chavis,
Pembroke registrar with assisting certain
candidate* with registering voters
preferentially.

charges categorical! v
According to el< tions officials, the
charges against oil* r candidates have been
referred to the dlJLel attorney. At press
time, no disposition had hecn made of the
charges.
Chavis appeared before board members
Monday afternoon to respond to the
charges. Chavis informed the board that he
had offered his services to each one of the
16 candidates in the Pembroke municipal
elections No action was taken hv the
board.

Oxendinc hegan his career in Hoke
County in 1962 when he hesitantly
sccepted a position as principal of
Hawkeye School, formerly an all Indian
ichool in Hoke County. He remained .at
Hawkeye until 1968 when consolidation
jccurred Hawkeye was renamed South
Hoke and housed students from the 4th and
fth grades in the Kaeford area Oxendinc
remained as principal at South Hoke until
1973.
He then went to Upchurch Junior High
School where he remained until he took
over the reins at Hoke County High School
earlier this year

Beer & Wine
Lumberton and Rowland have approved
the sale of beer and wine. The vote
approves off premises sales in both towns,
while Lumberton voters approved the sale
of malt beverages by Grade A hotels and
restaurants too.
St. Pauls continued to hold out against the
sale of beer and wine, defeating the
measure by a close margin

were defeated in their bids for re-election,
incumbent W (rank Benton faces a
run off, and only Hubert Gore will return to
office by virtue of an immediate and clear
victory
In precinct 2 Joan Bacot, the city's first
female council representative, was
defeated by challenger Mitchell Taylor.
Bacot was appointed to tier position on
City Council following the resignation of
former Councilman Douglas Mclntyre
The final unofficial tally in precinct 2 gave
Tavlor 'H * votes, Bacot VK), and Bryan

Braccv, in precinct 8, also faced two
challengers, Bruce W Davis, the apparent

Mayor Pro Tern W frank Benton will
square off against O'Neill T. Bennett in a
run-off contest Both contenders received

For incumbent Hubert Gore in precinct 5 it

McCormick (7 votes) and E.L. Ward (I '8
votes). Gore topped (he precinct chart with
210 votes.
