Homecoming Queen bv
out-going queen. Miss Wanda
Hunt, in the school gymnasium
during a dance.
Ann is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Willie F. Sampson of
Pembroke. She is in the eighth
grade and is a cheerleader.

Veteran's Day
Friday. November 11, has been
proclaimed Veterans Day in
North Carolina and it is an
official state holiday.
But the federal government
observed Veterans Day on
October 24. This may confuse
people in Robeson County about
exactly when Veterans Day is,
but according to state officials,
the confusion will subside in
1978.
Next year there will be but one
officialdav nationwide to observe
Veterans Day- November II
According to Charles
Beddingfield. Assistant
Secretary for Veterans Affiars,
that date was traditionally
recognized as Veterans Day until
several years ago when the
federal government changed
most holidays to Mondays to give
federal employees three 4a v
breaks. "Trie fourth Monday of
October was designated as
Veterans Day and most states,
including North Carolina, began
to observe it on that day,"
explained Beddingfield.
Veterans organizations
expressed much discontent over
the change and individual states
began to change their observance
back to the traditional date. The
North Carolina General
Assembly changed it back to the
November 11 date in 1975. This
year, all states except the District
of Columbia, Mississippi, and
South Dakota will salute Veterans
on November 11.
Veterans Day commemorates
the signing of the Armistice,
which ended fighting of World
War I, at II a.m. November 11,
1918. The special day has
become a time for all veterans to
be honored. In proclaiming
Veterans Day this year Gov Jim
Hunt called on the citizens of the
state to honor the veterans of all
wars, who "have served our stale
and nation with honor and
distinction."

The early history of New
Bethel Baptist Church reveals
some very humble beginnings.
At the start of this century, there
was a growing consciousness
among the Indian citizens of
Sampson County to recognize
and preserve their Indian
identity. The movement was
expressed religiously and
socially. There were
simultaneous efforts to establish
an Indian school and an Indian
church. Both church and school
date back to 1910. Prior to 1910,
thcrp were at least two places of
worship for the New Bethel
community.
The more famous place of
worship was the old Oldfellows
Lodge for Indians which was
located on Mr. Arthur
Brewington's place. A favorite
tradition tells of three big oak
trees around the Lodge that the
worshippers named Faith. Hope
and Charity. On this day, Hope
isstandingin the front yard of Mr.
Hardy Brewington. This is not to
refute I Cor. 13:13.
The other known place of
worship was crude and without
shelter. It was in the front yard of
Mr. Isam Ammons, who was
then a tenent farmer. According
to our best report, this meeting
palce was only a short distance
from our present church site.
Meeting in open air. the
worshippers sat on seats which
were merely long board benches.
It seems that theOldfellows Lodge
was used more for night services
and services held in bad weather.
The open-air meeting place was a
popular place otherwise for

At least by 1910. worship
services were being held in die
New Bethel Indian School.
Later, approximately one fourth
(14) acre of land was purchased
from Mr. Hardic A. Brewington
and wife Frances The plot of
ground was sold to the church for
$1.00. On August 26, 1911 a
deed for the property was issued.
Among those many who were
responsible for the establishment
of the church were: C.D.
Brewington, A.S.Locklear,
Haidie A. Brewington, J. Authur
Brewington, and W.D.
Brewington. The site of the
church is its present site on Route
I, Clinton, N.C. in Sampson
County.
The first deacons of the church
were: J. Authur Brewington.
G.B. Brewington, H.E.
Goodman, G W McLane and
E.i. Simmons. The following
men served as pastors over the
years: Gilbert Locklear, 1910;
English A. Locklear, 1919; N.P.
Sanderson, . 1927; S.A.
Hammonds, 1928; June
Sampson. 1931; C.E. Locklear,
1935; Cooledge Cummings,
1948; Welton Lowry, 1950;
R.W. Maynor, 1951; HE.
Brewington, 1965; David
Brewington, 1968; and Michael
Cummings, 1970.
In 1959, the believers built a
new modern sanctuary and
Sunday School facilities. The
work was a community effort with
Christians and non- Christains
working along with the pastor.
R.W. Maynor, to complete the
new church building. In 1972, a
new Fellowship Hall was added
right beside the sanctuary. One
half ('/i) acre of land was
and family Today, the New
Bethel church site is a beautiful
campus with all church property
value at $123,000.00. The
church supports a fall time
ministry on its own field while
showing Christian concern for
the Lord's work throughout the
Burnt Swamp Association and
the Southern Baptist Convention.
While most of the pastoria!
leadership has come from
Robeson County, the loeal
church talent and leadership is
commendable. The life of this
church has been sustained by the
Holy Spirit's moving in the lives
of many fine Christians from
.right here in Sampson County.
Their reputation for hospitality
and friendliness is widespread.
Their generosity is genuine,
stemming from hearts which
have been warmed bvjhe Spirit
of God. About 23 years ago.
Rev. L.W. Jacobs complimented
this church as the most ideal ?
setting for full-time ministry
amoung our churches. The love
and respect he sensed then lingers
in the spirit of this church.
