The General Session held at O.P. Owens Agriculture Auditor ium on Tuesday morning is part of the Health Career Awareness Project, a new program of educational health exposure by the Robeson County Board of Education. After a brief introduction and welcome by the Project Coor dinator, BUI James Brewing ton, an explanation of the origin and need for the Health Career Project was given by Mr. Purnell Swett, Superin tendent of Robeson County Schools. Mr. Joe Glezen, Personnel Director for Southeastern General Hospital spoke speci fically about the job market for health careers in Robeson County which is extremely short in health manpower. Ms. Jacqueline Hawkins, Recruiting Specialist for the East Carolina School of Medicine spoke of the oppor tunities off coed by the newest medical corf^Hex In the state. Dr. Lavonia Allison, director of North Carolina Health Man power in Chapel Hill gave a very motivating presentation, educating the students about the various health careers requirements from 1 year to 13 years. Dr. Allison stressed the critical area of need, parti cularly podiatry, dentistry and ^ allied health. She emphasized the need for minority involve v ment in health careen and the opportunities available to them. Mrs. Harriet Faulkner, direc tor of Minority Recruitment at Bowman Gray School of Medicine also Stressed the need for increasing the num I ber of minority health care professionals. With Mrs. Faulkner from Bowman Gray were Earl Cummings, a stu dent in the Physician's Assistant Program and Dr. dra W. Smith a senior medical student. Mr. Cummings, a Lurabee Indian spoke of the barriers which confronted him as a student and as a minority in achieving his goal as a health professional. Relying on the 'five d's', Mr. Cum mings expressed his main determiner as "extreme self-discipline." Dr. Smith capped the program with an inspirational presentation of becoming "the best one can be with the time that God has given them." The program geared toward those seniors who have ex pressed an interest in a health career gave the students an opportunity to receive a more realistic view of just what it takes to achieve the profes sion. The students accom panied by their guidance coun selors represented each county high school. The General Session is only the beginning of the many ways the stu dents in the county will be exposed to the opportunity in the health careers through the efforts of the Health Career Awareness Project.
