Lumberton No Apooinrmenr Necessary \ Forty Indian Groups Petition For Federal Status The Bureau of Indian Affiars has received petitions from forty Indian groups seeking to be acknowledged by the Fede ral Government as Indian tribes. A list of the 40 groups, from 21 states, is being published in the Federal Kegleter as re quired by regulations made effective October 2, 1978. These regulations establish the procedures for establish ing that an American Indian group exists as an American Indian Tribe. A total of 496 Indian or Alaska Native groups are now acknowledged by the Federal Government to be tribes. These groups are located In 27 states and Include 218 Alaskan VBlage groups. Under the regulations only those groups whose members and their ancestors existed in tribal relations since aborigin al times and have retained some aspects of their tribal sovereignty can be aaknow lodged as tribes.
