Profile: 4^ Coach Ricky Locklear l^WAA'L Coach Ricky first became interested in football in 1966. when the county integrated schools. He end Ms brothers decided to go to Fairmont instead of Fmrgiove because Fairmont had a football pro gram and Fairgrove didn't. His first year there he only watched hit brothers play ball, but with a tittle posh from them he decided to play the following year. High school football was a big inspiration on Coach Ricky's Hfe. When asked how he felt about high school footbal, he replied. ' It was a guide and it really motivated me into wanting to be something or somebody. It gave me enough pride to rise above the average. There were times I regreted but the good outweighed the bad by a big Coach Ricky admits he had s hard time adjusting to college football because the players were bigger, stronger, and faster. His first year as a college player he was red skirted (mis means yon prac tice without playing time). The following yes/" he gained some weight and caught on to the way things were suppose to go and he made it. Us ambition at one time was to play pro football, but he lacks the size and height which so many pro teams want. He tried owl far the Cleveland Browne lest spring. They didn't seem to be impressed so he thinks his playing days are over. Now his long range goal is to go heck to school and possibly get with some unrver sitv and coach on the college t 1 ICVCi. He enioys coaching high school football because ne likes working with young players. He also considers it a challenge because he has to know the fundamentals and how to help his players learn them so they will be able to execute them properly. He thinks being a success as a high school team takes a great deal of people who are moti vated. Kinds mentally ready, aflti who are physically able to do the job. Coach Ricky's short range dis to establish a winning ball team here at Pem broke Senior High School. "The first thing we need to do change is the number of players who are in our pro gram." Says Coach Ricky, "We've got to have more players who are willing to train themselves to become better football players." Coach Ricky is also interested in the track program here at Pembroke Senior HighSchoot. He thinks the reason track is such a minor sport at PSHS' is because many people don't know the concepts of the game. He says an athlete who participates in track makes himself or herself more com petitive. He also thinks work done in track on speed, endurance, throwing and jump ing are abilities which will carry over to the other sports.
