C EDITORIAL AND OPINION PAGE PUBLISHED EACH THURSDAY by The Lumbee Publishing Co P O Bo* 1075 Pembroke NC 28372 Publication No 978380 Second Class Postage PaM at Pembroke. NC. AS I SEE IT by Bruce Barton "UMMSSaUWUmawm^MmuWMBa A PERSONAL NOTE... I am a follower of Christ, sad s member of Deep Branch Baptist Church in that order. I follow Christ, not man. I want to be like Christ. I am gloriously happy; it is wonder ful. beyond articulation, to have a personal Saviour. But I believe Christians should herald their allegiance to Christ by their Christ like actions; therefore, I do little bragging about my Christianity. I know, instinc tively, that folks would rather see a sermon than hear one. That is why I try to be Christ like in my dealings with my fellowman. One should know you are a Christian if they hang around you for any length of time. They should not have to ask you. But this one time only 1 wish to say a few words about my church-Deep Branch Baptist Church. It is a good church, peopled by good and earthy folk who love Christ. I found Christ at Deep Branch Baptist Church. My church is special to me, as 1 am sure yours is. We are having a special day at Deep Branch Baptist Chur ch this coming Sunday. We are honoring Mr. Claude A. Samp son, a life long member of the Deep Branch Baptist Church. He will be 78 years old on July 26, today. That is his chron ilogjcal age, his physical age. But he wiU be noting another special birthday on the 29th, his spiritual birthday. He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour S8 years ago the 29th of July. He is a faithful member of his church, and is presently teach ing die senior men's adult daas. He has served his God and church faithfully over the yuan and heads the social committee at the present time. Mr. Claude is a decent man. fearful of God and helpful to his fellowman. He is a proud member of the Deep Branch community, presently serving as president of the Deep Branch Volunteer Fire De partment. He cares; he is led by Christ. He has been going to Deep Branch Baptist Church "is long as I can remember." When I am a senior citizen, if the Lord allows me to remain on earth that long, 1 want to be known, like Mr. Claude is, as a decent man, one who fears God and loves his fellow man. The entire service Sunday will be dedicated to Mr. Claude. There will be a brief program between Sunday School and Worship Service recognizing Mr. Claude for his unswerving fidelity to his God and church. The public is cordially invited to attend. Later, after church turns out, there will be an old fashioned covered dish meal at the Deep Branch Volunteer Fire De partment. It is an honor for me to know Mr. Claude. He has taught me a lot as an elder at my church. It is good for us to honor and respect our elders. They have a lot to teach us; we have a lot to learn. I say this: honor the elders among you; learn all you can from them. What they teach us (and what we learn) is the continuity of life. We cannot know where we are going if we do not know where we have been. Mr. Claude can tell us alo( about where we have been at Deep Branch Baptist Chur ch. ' ' It is good and right to honor our elders, our parents. God bless you Mr. Claude, may Sunday be a special day for you. We love you I EDITORIAL EXPRESSION Dr. Oxendine's Complaint Is Proper Soto say It's sour grapss; others contsnd that It will do no good. Othsrs are so busy sidling up to Dr. Paul Givens that they don't want to be distracted. But the recent complaint lodged by Dr. Joseph Oxendine with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Is proper, and Is a welcome respite from the rhetoric of late. Finally, someone Is doing something constructive about an untenable situation. Whatever happens, I believe Pembroke State University Is threatened as an institution of higher learning. Pembroke State University is not a pet project of local legislators, like East Carolina or Raleigh or UNC-Chapel Hill, etc. Noone seems to really care about the institution except the Indian community. The esprit de corp of the institution Is disgraceful. The mostly transient student body could care less about the school. They don't ride around with Braves bumper stickers or defend the antics of this Braves celebrity or that one. The faculty lives mostly In Lumberton. They work at Pembroke State University but they wish the Institution was soma place else. They are uncomfortable with the school's Indian heritage. But the Indian community cares about the school. They support the school through good times end bad. Without the Indian community support PSU most likely would be a rest home for adminlstretors with high blood preseure end the like. It is time to stand and fight. I support Dr. Oxendine's complaint. I pray he Is successful. PSU needs Indian leadership through the difficult years ahead. Without Indian leadership, we expect PSU to be closed down In the next few years as a regional university. Maybe swap places with RTI or become an adjunct of Fayettevllle State or be supplanted by nearby Campbell College or St. Andrews or any of a hundred or more possibilities. Racism Is real; ft cannot be hidden from view. Racism Is like a cancer; it will eventually destroy you. One should never accept racism; even a hint of ft. When racism Is suspected, a complaint should be lodged forthwith. It Is good that Dr. Joseph Oxendine has lodged a complaint; now let his complaint be investigated fully. . ? July 30th is a significant cay in the life of the Pembroke Area Presbyterian Ministry I At 11:00 a.m. that morning we will dedicate the new facilities of the Pembroke Community Workshop, a mis sion project of the Pembroke Ministry. The Moderator of the Pres byterian Church, U.S. Dr. Albert Winn will be with us to deliver the dedicatory address. Luncheon will be served im mediately following the ser vice. You may remember that the Workshop began in April 1978 providing work experience, counseling and assistance to otherwise unemployable per sons in the Pembroke area. We began with only four (4) clients and 250 square feet of floor space. On June 1, 1979 we moved into a building which we have renovated ourselves, which has 8400 square feet, enough room for our present work aad for expansion too. We now have twenty (20) full time clients and twenty-two (22) summer youth work experience cheats. This has only been possible with God's guidance and the prayerful support of all the people of Fayetteville Pres bytery. Therefore, Monday we will give thanks for the providence of God that we should be so fortunste in being able to employ and help so many people in such a short time. We look forward to your being with us for this joyous occasion and hope that you will make time in your busy schedule to join us both for the dedicatory service and the luncheon fol lowing. So that we might make preparation for the proper number, please call the Work shop at (919) 521-8661 before Friday noon, to let us know you will be coming. Yours in Christ Rev. John Robinson Making Family Ufa More Fun VACATION IDEAS Planning a trip thia year? If to, little need to fume about fuel if you spend your vacation in a city. For many vacationers, nothing beats the glamour and glitter of the city? particularly on special oc casions like birthdays and anniversaries when you and your spouse want to cele brate wrth a few good dinners out, followed by a show or concert. Many of the nation's hotels offer special packages and, once you arrive, you can use mass transportation to reach many areas of the city. Week or weekend pack ages sometimes include such amenities as drinks and meals, hotel facilities such as saunas and pools and free transporMHon to nearby recreational facilities. One way to plan what to see and do, as well as where to stay is to use the new Mobil City, Vacation and Business Uuide It lists some 1,000 hotels and restaurants in 63 cities, and quality rates them with Mobil's one to five-star system. ^ n r- - mm The Guide also provides information on all major attractions and maps of downtown areas and air ports to help you navigate. It rates and describes the fare in the area's better res taurants and is available at many Mobil service stations and bookstores for $4.95. A city vacation can mean more time off the road and more time enjoyed together. It can make a big difference in the way you feel when you return home, too! Advance arrangements for a dormitory room or other approved lodging facility will also be your responsibility In the next couple of issues we hope to answer questions for you like: 1) When can I apply? 2) Who may I seek* advice assistance from, to see if I am eligible? 3) What makes me eligible? 4) What must I submit? I hope that these and other questions will be answered through this series of articles.
