EDITORIAL AND OPINION PAGE AS I SEE IT by Bruce Barton The day the etwifag <ip;ii 1 notice that the Pembroke State University's Braves Club ha* kicked off their 197940 membership drive, according to a press release received from Gary Spitler. PSU's Sports Information Director. Since I am the founding father of the Braves Club as it b now organised 1 feel like a few comments from me are in order. I took a facsimile created by Coach Ed Crain and others andbreathed new life in it, along with 6 other guys. The Braves Club has always had a rocky esistence; princi pally because the university has not supported the Braves Club, although the booster club was created expressly to support Pembroke State University. Lacey Gane. PSU's athletic director, seemingly does not like the Braves Club period. He does not seem to even support the concept of a booster club: and acts unen thusiastic about athletic awards banquets and halls of fame and things like that. He was a disappointment to me when I was president of the Braves Gub. Under my ten ure. the Braves Club gave the athletic program at PSU some S4.000 and put on a very successful annual banquet and an athletic awards banquet. Rod Griffin, a native of Fairmont and an All-American basketball player from Wake Forest University was our banquet speaker. We did a lot of good positive things. We were not applauded. And Gane and the university seemed unappreciative. That's the day the cheering stopped (at least as far as 1 am concerned) because I stepped down shortly thereafter. The problem with the univer sity is simple: no one really (deep down) cares whether the Braves win or not. We have to "boost" athletics at Pem broke State University and make them care ...they (the fans) used to care when the Braves were really the Braves. Now.... And a Braves Gub, enthus i ?MMVMIJ auppvi IfcU IIVIII IIIC chancellor on down would help tremendously. I have not seen or felt that committment or support. I know the new president of the Braves Club, Jerry Lowry, hopes that the university and fans support the Braves this year. They have not done so in the Braves Club's first two years of existence; maybe they will change their attitude this year. But a booster club must remain autonomous, apart from the focal point of its existence. And the booster dub must raise and give all the monies they can raise, and let the university spend it as it sees fit. That is the way a booster dub like the Braves Club is supposed to work. But this year's edition of the Braves Club has Lacey Gane and lay Pennington on the board of directors. That is foolishness of the highest order. Gane is athletic director at PSU and Pennington is chairman of the department of health and physical education. It's sort of like belonging to your owa fan dub. I hope the Braves Club much success; everyone likes to see their own creation ihake it. As the founding father of the Bravgs Club I hope my cre ation does not become a monster and turn on me. It was a pleasant day; the Brewingtons are good com pany. and I enjoyed getting to know them better. While on the way I taught their second grader. Joel, how to spell "G-N-A-T." Joel seemed hap py about it; after all. most second graders and adults too spell the crazy word "N A-T." So. Joel had a good and productive trip too. We were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Oxendine: Jim is the son of the late Rev. James Oxendine and Mrs. Oxendine who still lives in Robeson County. He is a plant manager at a chemicals research and production facilities near Rock Hill. S.C. He is also a deacon at Catawba Baptist Church. The Oxendines are nice peo ple; we enjoyed developing our friendship with them. Too, Jim Oxendine and I had a nice time visiting some of the Catawba Indians who live nearby. Emerton LETTERS Td THE EDITOR Needs 1 Medical Attention I in an inmate serving a 1 day to five year sentence up here at the Wagram Prison Unit, and believe me, it's not very much I can really say about it. We receive The Carolina indUa Voice up here every week, and recently you have published a few articles that were about law suits filed by prisoners pertaining to medi cal treatment. Well, Mr. Bar ton, I don't understand much about those cases, but here is something you can write about. A few months back, I injured by leg while playing softball. Now I don't have very much of a complaint with the prison department, as much as I do with their medical staff. You see, after my injury I was taken to Scotland County Hospital. There. 1 was told by their doctor that I only had a broken blood vessel. Now. a few days pass and my leg just happens to turn a different color. So this time I saw the doctor who works here, and was hired by the state. His reaction to my leg ; don't worry about it. It will be alright. It's only a broken blood vessel. So. now all I can do is hope and pray that the two doctors know what they are talking about. Now. here it is. three and a half months later, and this is what really scares me. my leg has begun to feel numb and 1 have a swollen place on it the size of a hard baseball, right around the main artery of my left leg. So here is what happens. I go back to the unit doctor here, who happens to be Dr. Clifton Davenport. He tells me: son. you have to have an operation on that leg. "You have to go to Raleigh. Now. Mr. Barton, the mere mention of an operation was enough. But the fact that it is }o bp in Raleigh just, made it won*. * ?? * Mr. Barton, if those doctors would have taken the time to x-ray my leg, or have it x-rayed, none of this would have happened. But. instead, they took one of their medical guesses. And now If I refuse the operation I may lose a leg. Maybe the doctors think that because I am a prisoner they can afford to take such guess es. Mr. Barton, I love to get around. And I realize I need both my legs to do that. But, from what it looks like now, that will be impossible. Just because two doctors didn't do their job the wiy they should have, and the way their profess ion calls, for. But. Mr. Barton. telling me that my leg needs operating on isn't enough, for I intend to take this to every court I have to so that people can see what kind of (treatment a person gets when someone thinks there is ikt one who cares. Now, I may not get anywhere with what I do. But. Mr. Barton, if people read about it maybe, just maybe, it can be stopped before someone else gets placed in my position. So. you see Mt Barton, some things happen here that are true. Maybe if people read about me. then 1 can have something done about this before these people can stop it. Thank you. And wish me luck. Yours truly. Charles LacMam Wagram, NC 1 Who Cares? Who care*, whether Sunshine or Rain Who caret, whether Love or Pain There's One who cares. The unforgiving sin that will send a man or woman to hell, without any hope as far as the Legalizes are concerned. But listen to me, thanks be to our Blessed Lord and God, the one who loved us to death, said and I quote, I John l:9-9-"lf we confess our sins he Jesus is faithful and j- st to forgive nofov sins, sad to deanae us from si) unrighte ousness. 10- if we say we 'everybody) have not sinned (preachers, deacons. But still you want to walk around and point a finger at everyone else, but you are so Godly, you stink, in my sight and I know you must make God sick to the guts. You Pharisees, you see somebody headed for church and just because they won't go where you go and maybe you heard a buzzard came by and left a little stink, you tell people not to go to that church. God help you. You had better get down on your knees and ask God to forgive you. 1 would hate to face God with all of that hate and envy in my heart. Luke 6:36 "Be ye therefore merciful as your father is merciful." Of course, God wasn't taking to you. You're too godly. 37 "Judge not and you shall not .be judged, condemn not and you shall not be condemned, forgive and jmx shall be forgiven." Mea ning that if you don't forgive your brother or sister of their sins, then God won't forgive you. of your sins. You don't seem to care what God tMaks about it and furthermore, yon don't care. Why don't yon try being more Christ like and forgive them and worship with them, and shout the victory and let God judge them? And I behove that God would be pleased and sinners would be saved. Ovet one hundred times In the Bible God commanded as to love one another. I John 1:30 said and I quote, "If a man say, I love God and hateth his bndh whom he hath seen, bow can he loves God whom he hath not seen." I am glad that no I matter what a man does, Godl will forgive him. All of you people who have been married one time, or two times or even twenty times and your church won't forgive you or take yon in, we will be glad to have you. And if there is anything you can do in the church, then do it for the glory of God. Thank you. A brother in Christ, MsaSsu^ NC*3t3d4 V '?? ^ , Robeson Technical Institute Lumberton. N.C.
