Senior Energy Information Specialist at CP St L as their guest speaker Tuesday even ing. The need for additional power in our State is growing steadily each year. Last year 63 new industries came into the area and their needs plus those of the employees who come to live here push our energy needs steadily higher, and the estreme heat of summer and our recent colder than usual winters have resul ted in all the population using more energy than usual. What can we do about this situation? We can. as indi viduals. endeavor to conserve energy as much as possible. As a nation we can make greater use of coal- this is one energy source which our coun try has in great abundance. It is estimated we have enough coal to last for 300 years. Our country can also work on the development of solar energy. However, one of the most efficient and economical sour ces of energy is through nuclear power. Carolina Power St Light is not a newcomer to the field of nuclear energy. It has been associated with the develop ment of commercial nuclear power for the generation of electricity for more than 20 years, in 19So it joined with other utilities in the buildig and operation of the Parr Shoals Plant in South Carolina. In 1971 followed the C P &. L H.B. Robinson Plant near Hartsville, SC and in 1975 and 1977 two units of the Bruns wick Nuclear Plant near South port, NC were placed in service. Presently plans are underway for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant located near Raleigh. NC. Work on this plant begsn in 1978 and the entire project is scheduled for completion in 1991. This enormous plant will consist of four 900,000- Kilo watt generating units and during peak construction for work force will number about 3,500 and the permanent operating staff of the plant will be about 700 persons. Slides of the plant and its capabilities were shown. Guests at the meeting were Woody Caudle.
