PEMBROKE STATE Q UNIVERSITY I ; I GENE WARREN . fl 4 PSU TO HAVE SHOAL THANKSGIVING CONVOCATION NOV. M A special Thanksgiving Con vocation--or service-will be held at Pembroke State University's Performing Arts Center Tues day. Nov. 40, at 11 a.m. This is a PSU flrst-and it is a noble idea by Chancellor Paul K. Ovens. i PSU classes at 11 a.m. will be cancelled so students can attend the service. Letters sre being sent to churches through out the area, inviting their members to the service. In this way PSU is joining the region it serves in special thanks for the blessings that sre ours. i Dr. Jelm T. Bussed. professor of Education at PSU who serves as associate rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lumberton, will be the speaker. He has a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary at Northwestern University and a Master of Sacred Theology degree from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. "1 think this is a wonderful idea." says Dr. Russell. "I think it will help to unite the University and the surrounding com munities." Speaker Russell has a tremendous back ground. His other degrees are an A.B. in History from Oberlin, O., College and a Ph.D. in Adult Education from Indiana University. He has also done post-doctoral work in Psychology at Columbia University and was a visiting scholar for two summers at Harvard University. During World War II, Dr. Russell served as Chief of Signals in China with the "Flying Tigers." He was a cryptographer, encipher ing and deciphering messages for Gen. Claire Chennault. As a 19-year-old, he had 40 men under him. Others on the program are Rev. Lawrence Hardy, Berea Baptist Church; Winston Hardman, PSU Baptist Campus Minister; and Rev. Bay Sparrow, Pembroke's First Methodist Church. The PSU Concert Choir will also perform, led by Dr. Harold Slagie. The Choral Benediction was composed by Dr. William Fritz. This service should be especially uplifting to all as we express our thanks to God for His goodness to us. PSU HAS FIRST PLANNING RETREAT IN SEVEN YEARS Thursday through Saturday will be the time for a planning retreat for Pembroke State University at Pinehurst. Some 40 members of the PSU administration and faculty have been invited. Consultants will also be on hand as the University takes a good look at its self and where it is going. Discussion groups will be led bv Dr. Thomas Loach, chairman of Communicative Arts; Dr. Charles Jenkins, dean of academic affairs for programs and faculty develop ment; Dr. James B. Chavts. vice chancellor for student affairs; and Dr. Kathryn Rileigb. chairperson of the Psychology Department. PSU had a retreat similar to this at North Myrtle Beach, S.C., in October, 1972, with 47 taking part. This was a special conference on curriculum Reform. Included were five at trie nation's most renowned experts on changing curriculum to fit the times. It is hoped that new strengths will be gained from the Ptnehurst retreat. ADVERTISING EDITIONS COMING OUT? PSU ON COVER This is the time of year when the major newspapers in the state publish their college editions. These seek to attract students to the various campuses--and there is friendly competition among the schools. PSU will have the privilege this year of having a color photograph on the cover of the college edition of the Charlotte Observer and Charlotte News. The Observer publication date is Nov. 25. The Charlotte News will be published Nov. 27. Pembroke State will also be in the Greensboro Daily News edition Nov. 18 and in the Raleigh News A Observer edition Nov. 25. PSU will also have a half-page ad in the Southern Pines Pilot's Jan. 16 edition. This is all a plus for PSU and the Pembroke community. ALUMNI NEWS BEING PRINTED BY INDIAN VOICE For the second straight year The Carolina Indian Voice is printing the "Pembroke State University Alumni News and Briefs." It should be off the press next week. Another edition is planned for January as PSU prepares for its biggest homecoming in history Saturday, Feb. 16. JONES INTERVIEWED BY COURIER, JENKINS PROUD POPPA . The Charleston News St Courier is doing a special feature on Dr. English E. Joan, chancellor emeritus of PSU. A stringer from Dillon. S.C., telephoned our office recently, wanting some information on his back ground-ond we have countless albums. The reporter had been to the Jones home for an interview. A proud father is Dr. Charles Jenkins, PSU dean of academic affairs for programs and faculty development. He is one of the really nice guys on the PSU campus. His wife is the "Miss PSU" of 1%7-the former Karen Gibson. They had a six-pound, nine-ounce daughter, Elizabeth Brooke, born Oct. 31. On your calendar, please circle Wednesday, Nov. 14. That is when this year's "Miss PSU" contest is held at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. In a non-sports appearance, BBly Lee, the always enthusiastic head basketball coach of PSU. will be speaking to a high school department at Lumberton's First Baptist Church Sunday morning. His topic will be: "Being A Postive Christian." Billy always seems full of pep and will be communicating this to the young people. Congratulations to Chertyn Locfclear, PSU junior from Prospect, for being chosen as the Peace Corps representative on the PSU campus. She will be flying-for the first time in her life-to Atlanta next week to receive some tutoring on her new responsibilities. Pembroke Police Make Arrests in Break-ins On Friday, October 1$, a larceny was reported at Oxen dine's Gas & Grill in Pem broke. Stolen was Sl.SOO in cash. Pembroke. Police have arrested Jackie Hunt, 28, of Rt. 1, Rowland and charged him with larceny and obtaining money under false pretenses. Pembroke Police have made four arrests in connection with a breaking and entering and larceny on October 24 at Cecil Locklear's Apartments on West 4th Street. Charged with breaking and entering and larceny were Charles Nelson Oxendine, 16, of Rt. 3, Lum berton. Rod Dial of Rt. 1, Pembroke, and a juvenile whose name was not released. A. Jacobs of Pembroke has been charged with receiving stolen goods in connection with the crime. WilHe Von Lowry's Beauty A Barber Shop on West 3rd Street was the scene of a breaking and entering and larceny on October 25. Value of the stolen merchandise, which included a television, hairdryer, and three straight razors, was placed at $300. Police have recovered the television and hairdryer. Charged in the incident were Charles Nelson Ozendine, 16, of Rt. 3, Pembroke, Anita Strickland, 16, of Rt. 1. Row land, Mary Oxendine, 16, of Strickland's Heights, Pem broke, and an unidentified juvenile. There have been several arrests made in connection with a November 1 break-in at Western Auto in Pembroke. Stolen were guns, ammu nition, watches, knives, and several hand calculators, with a total value of SI ,000. Pem broke Police have charged Mike Pierce, 24, of Rt. 2, Pembroke, Billy Ray Jacobs, 16, of Garden Street, Pem broke, Stony Cummings, 16, of Strickland Heights, Pembroke, and James Victor LockleaT, 17, of Rt. 2, Pembroke, with breaking and entering and larceny. Still being sought are three persons, including one juvenile. Police have recover ed two guns and two knives taken in the crime. The Pembroke Police Depart ment acknowledges the co operation given them by the Robeson County Sheriff's Department in the above investigations.
