Cliffhanger 40-36
by Dnvtd Mafseta
, Pinpirt- Prospect had to
battle down to the Wire Friday
night against Otrum before
polling out a narrow win. At
the same time. Pembroke's
Warriors were getting
blown out at home by Fatr
grove.
Saturday the two teams met
in a cliffhanger that wasn't
decided until trie final minute
of play. And for the second
night in a row. the Cats won a
close one at home, defeating
county rival Pembroke 40-36.
The game which has devel
oped into one of the better
rivalries in Robeson County.
beginning
?
After ? Ricky Locfclear baa
ket had tied it up at 4-4. Darrvi
Lock tear gave Prospect* lead it
would bold until late hi die
game when his shot fell
through with 2:09 left ia the
period.
The four-point advantage
the Cats held at the dose of
the first quarter went to sis
midway through the second
when Darryl again connected
for two. That lead was stretch
ed to eight several ariaetrs
later on a Lynn Edward
Locfclear bank shot.
Prospect went to the dress
ing room at halftime holding a
23-16 lead over the Warriors.
During the third period, the
Cats threatened to put the
game out of reach as they
opened up an 11-point spread
with 3:24 to go in the period.
Aggressive play on defease by
Prospect prevented the War
riors from getting too many
extra shots. The deliberate Cat
offense continued to eat ap
precious time.
The Warriors began to chip
away at Prospect's lead down
through the fourth quarter and
finally slipped ahead 35:34
with 1:06 remaining when
Ricky Sanders sank a pair of
free throws. It was a short
lived lead as Darryl Locfclear
put the Cats on top 12 seconds
later, sinking both ends of a
two-shot foul.
After Pembroke had tied it
up at 36-36. trryl put Pro. *
sped ahead for good when he
connected on the first of two
charity tosses. Phil Locfclear
added two more a little later
when he intercepted on outlet
pass by Ricky Sanders and was
fouled by Roscoe. Charles.
Any lingering hopes Pem
broke fans may have had at
this point were dashed when
the Wsmun were ?>iltl?4fU -fjjf
charging with seven sttnsfi
left, turning the ball over to
the Cats. Marcus Jacobs sand
one of two free throws after
beinu fouled with htst three
seconds remaining to give
Prospect ? 40-36 win.
GOILS VARSITY

season high 24 points to lead a
second half surge by Pembroke
as the Lady Warriors over
came a 21-14 half- time
disadvantage to defeat Pro
spect 35-28. Sheila Regan

Karen Moore tallied II for
Prospect. The win,
Pembroke's second, in as
many nights, ups the Lady
