his father applied for a Small Business
Administration Loan and were ap
proved.
That was in 1970. "We suned the
business about the time I started college
(Pembroke State University from
which he was graduated in 1974 with a
degree in business administration.) It
was a nightmare--mean!." he moaned,
remembering.
"Actually, we were victims of cir
cumsUnces. It's funny because I always
hated paperwork. I wanted to be a forest
ranger or marine biologist." Said the
easy-going young man who was named
Rabon "after the late Sen. Sam
Ray bum."
Holding up a thick government con
tract. he smilingly admits. "We're
working on 10 jobs right now for Warner
Robins ALC. We started negotiating for
this contract in June and got our final
hard copy this month (March 1980)."
Pointing to the back shop, he said,
with a hearty laugh. "I haven't been
back there since 1975." He spends his
time on paperwork and seeking con
tracts from government sources-he was
certified by the Small Business
Administration as a disadvantaged firm
in 1975-and from civilian markets.
"Western Electric in Winston-Salem is
our biggest non-government custo
mer."
His youngest brother joined Ihe firm in
1971; another brother in 1973. The first
employee was hired in 1975 which is
when the Small Business Office at
Robins discovered the Pembroke Ma
chine Company in its outreabh program.
Lowery's first Air Force contract was
for a small roller assembly to be used in
a mechanized loading ramp system. He
obtained that on a non-competitive
basis but subsequently submitted suc
cessful bids for other small parts
contracts.
"I've been to Robins several times,
and I definitely enjoyed the eiper
iences. (Once he was a keynote speaker
at a symposium for disadvantaged
firms.) I was sitting there talking to a
general and we found we had been in
Alaska, on the same base at the same
time."
He's had more business from Rabins
than any other government agency, he
said. "Robins has definitely gone ont at
its way to help this firm. Maet Hems
we've made have been fairly sop his
ticated. but they've stuck with us."
Lowerv also says. "It takes a long time
to gear up to this kind of paper work and
red tape. I guess we've been forced to
grow a little faster since I97S and our
government contracts."
Escorting a visitor around his plant.
Lowery points out his original old
equipment, still in use. and an array of
new machinery including a $102,000
computerized turning center purchased
last year.
Lowery studied karate in Japan and is
a third degree Brown Belt. Having
started lessons for his daughter. Lisa
Joy, 8, he says. "She's dynamite."
Lowery and his wife Lucy also have a
son. Matthew Turner. 5 months.
What does the busy young manu
facturer do to keep the paperwork and
expansion plans in their respective
places?
"Well, I go deep sea fishing, play
tennis or golf. I like almost any sport
you can name. What 1 really like to do is
sit on a creek bank with my fishing pole
and an old rusty pot filled with beans.
Now. that's the way to relax."

A ISA is a social as well as a
service organization. It was
organized in 1971 by Professor
Adolph Dial. Chairman of the
American Indian Studies
Department at P.S.U. The ori
ginal name of the club was the
Lumbee Student Association.
As the enrollment at P.S.U.
increased, more than one tribe
was represented. In 1973 the
name was changed to the
American Indian Student
Association. The purpose of
the organization is to make
known a pride in the American
Indian heritage, the economic,
political, and educational goals
of the American Indians, and
the unification of the Indian
people. The activities planned
are an attempt to stimulate
Indian awareness in the com
munity as well as on campus.
The AISA strongly encourages
all community members to
