r EDITORIAL AND OPINION PAGE... \ fWe Cannot Know Where We Are Going jAII If We Don't Know Where We've Been... Jj| So fittingly we honor our Pioneer Fathers * I As I See It by Bruce Barton * DR. KEN JOHNSON. MY FRIEND There are some in Robe son County who are foolish enough to believe that 1 dislike white people; they are mostly people who know absolutely nothing about me and. more likely than not. have never visited my office or spoken directly to me. I can be very engaging at times; for instance I am an expert concerning Adolph Hitler. Muhammad Ali. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ana other personalities like that. I know a lot of insignifi cant stuff, but a lot of it is engaging. So. get to know me and let me entertain you with some of my stories and bits and pieces of this and that before you judge me so inaccurately and unfairly. And. in retrospect. 1 am a very nice guy, really) Dr. Ken Johnson knows that; he is my friend. He is also white. So what? Race does not make any difference unless it makes a an le re nee. One has to be friendly to have friends. Dr. Ken Johnson is a friendly man; he has many, many friends. Dr. Johnson was recently honored at the installation of Dr. Paul Givens (Saturday. May 10) when he served as Grand Marshal. It was a singular honor and one be coming to the man and the record he has built in the Pembroke community. The Johnsons (his wife, Doris, is an assistant professor of music) live within a stone's throw of PSU. Students visit them constantly, taking ad vantage of the pool and the hospitality which is so evident when in the presence of the Johnsons. Dr. Johnson intro duced tennis to the Indian youth of the area, as well as swimming, water safety and life saving. He golfs regularly with the local fellows. He and Mrs. Johnson are retiring. Both are now 65. Dr. Johnson came to Pembroke State in 1964 as athletic director and chairman of the health and physical education department. He either started or helped to develop the soccer, tennis and wrestling programs at the school. ^ . Dr. Johnson is also a very active member of the local Pembroke Kiwanis Club, ser ving as scribe for many years. He has contributed Kiwanian happenings to the Carolina Indian Voice almost as long as we have been in business. I will miss him; his successor, hopefully, will do as well as Dr. Johnson has done with the assignment of contributing a column on Kiwanian happen ings to the Carolina Indian Voice.. Dr. and Mrs. Johnson per sonify the best in university community relations. Those who flee Pembroke after dark could learn a lot from the Johnsons. We are proud to claim them as friends. We wish others would be as friendly. We wish them well what ever they do in their retire ment years. We hope fervently that they will continue to live in Pembroke. Pembroke would not be the same without them. I WSLflfl >i ! I DR. KEN JOHNSON and his wife, Doris The way a house is built can save nump ^* 7.3 tons of coal a year. Some houses may look like C" any other house, but they don't ^ operate like any other house. When they're built to CP&Ls "Common Sense' standards. Compared to ordinary houses, they can save up to 40% on heating and cooling alone. And, since heating and cooling homes takes 12% of the energy America uses, that can make a big difference. It means a bigger supply of energy, and tremendous savings in the amount we have to generate. So, if you're building, find out about the "Common Sense House'at any CP&L office. Even if you're just remodeling or making improvements, Common Sense ideas can help. Because the more you get out of your energy dollar, the more I we can get out of ours. And the less our bills will have to go up later on. , b. . , r: >r"i ? IHhm* *!<??' 'f fcWtf <* ?*?**?*?-< ' *? til ?? *.-? *4 ?> ? M '? if fy + f*"? A -i f 1. *4 ' ?
