KED springs SCHOOl, FUNDS STILL HELD UP LUMBERTON-ReJ Springs sciMol otticiils teamed Monday that a pending discrimination law suit against Robeson Coun- ty's five school systems will bar Red Springs officials from PAGE S, THE CAROLINA INDIAN VOICE SCRAPBOOK FAVORlTfiS by Anne St. John paying of bills for a new vocational center. The Robeson County Board of Commissioners tabled a re quest from the Red Springs Board of Education for J575,000 to finish the project until the county board meets again Aug. 18. Robeson County attorney Joseph C. Ward Jr. hopes to know if bond attorneys will go ahead with the sale of W million in school bonds despite the pending discrimination suit. Two other school systems in Robeson County requested con struction funds Monday. The St. Pauls Board of Education was told it would have to wait until the bonds are sold before it can go ahead with the construction of a $l,5-million high school. The Fairmont Board of Education, however, was granted {196,000 for new construction because the funds reportedly had been promised last February as part of the school system’s allocation from $8 million in bonds sold last September, Ward said the existing situation of having school bonds up for sale and having a lawsuit pending is unprecedented in the county. He said county school bonds have not been sold in Robeson for about 20 years. The federal civil legal action, filed in June, alleges the county commissioners and officials from the five school systems in Robeson have artificially manipulated the school system lines to maintain racially segregated school systems. The Red Springs school system has had to request additional construction funds over and above their bond funds allocation to date because of an underestimation of the costs involved. Faith and prayer. "Prayer is the key to Heaven, but Faith unlocks the door." Webster defines Faith as belief. All of us have to believe in something or someone. How often do we find our faith misplaced! The agony of dis appointment and heartbreak is often the result of lost con fidence or "misplaced" faith. One way to avoid a continual occurence of this is to learn the value of prayer. A plaque upon my bedroom wall Bears three small words you may recall: 1 cannot say the words are new. But. oh, they are steadfast and true. The plaque itself is verv old-; But it is worth its weight in gold. Out of the darkness of the night It seems to shed a ray of light. I love it for the peace it brings; It simply says. "PRAYER CHANGES THINGS." --Laura Baker Haynes In my collection of writings on prayer. I have a story by the Rev. A. Purnell Bally. "A Layman who was known widely for his use of the term 'Amen.' was asked on one occasion why he used it. "Just what does ‘amen’ mean?" asked a curious friend. "The'sincere b|»ther replied. "In most cases'Si Joeans just this to me: 'Yes. Lprd, I'm with it. and I'll stand my share of the expenses.' "What do you mean when you say ‘amen’ at the end of your prayers?" he was asked. “When 1 say- 'amen' at the end of a prayer I mean just this; God I'm working with you that this may be true, but I'm willing to receive any one of your three replies-yes, no, or wait.' " Did you ever listen to the prayers of' a 'Child? They usually pray so unselfishly. Always they are concerned about the family members, their friends, theirpets. all the time not remembering to ask for blessings on themselves. What a lesson there is to be learned for prayer that it may be effective, that others will be our first concern. Too often we fake time to "say a prayer" when we are in trouble, or when we want a special favor. How many times do we forget to really thank God for all the beauty that is ours to enjoy. When we awake in the morn ing, the very first thing we should do is to give thanks to God that He has permitted us lo awake to another day. Then, we should ask-ask for suf ficient grace to carry us through the day. You will be surprised how much easier the day will go when you take a moment to "talk" with your Father in Heaven. Remember to thank Him, in the ways of a little child, and you will have more happiness than you've ever known before. If you want to deepen your prayer life, study the prayer Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gerhsemane (Luke 22:39-46). My Dad would call the family together And we would kneel to pray. He always gave thanks for his family Sometimes calling each one by name, I knew that he'd feel better He just didn't look the same. The years passed slowly onward And each of us older grew. Dad still prayed to the father To bring us all safely through. One by one. we all left home Our destiny to pursue. But we’ve always been in fluenced By the teachings that we knew. Now Mom and Dad's lives here are over To heaven they've already gone But at the close of day I wonder If they aren't calling the children home. If even one of our achieve ments Can be valued here as "fair." We'll have to give the credit To- a home where there was family prayer. -Anne St. John NOW THEN: Through the 17th century, the dominant phil osophy of education was rooted in the belief that the mind was a muscle. Like any other muscle, it would be strengthened by exercise. And so it was: Children were made to memorize and recite by rote—and not much more. NOW: We recognize learn ing as a complex, develop mental process that pro ceeds at a different rate with every individual. The importance of individual ized teaching is underscored by the growing use of com puter-based instruction, such as the PLATO system developed by Control Data Corp. and used throughout the country to teach basic skills.
