PEMBROKE--With $58,000 for the in stallation of a sound system in its Performing Arts Center as one of its projects approved. Pembroke State Uni versity received a total of $188,500 for four capital improvement projects at a recent meeting of the UNC Board of Governors. All of these were approved for the second year of the 1981-83 biennium, meaning funds for them will not be available until July of 1982. The PSU Performing Arts Center, which was completed in 1975 and seats 1,700 in an ultra modern setting, was built without a sound system because of. the construction costs. "TMa new sound system will be invaluable to us," said Mrs. Felicia Turner. PSU cultural events coordinator. "We have been operating since the construction of the Performing Arts Center with a makeshift sound system, using equipment from Old Main and Moore Hall. People have complained about not hearing the performers well, but this new system will remedy that situation. It will make for better entertainment and a better facility for in-coming professional people." Other projects approved for PSU for the second year of the 1981-83 bienmui. were: --$51,000 for campus drainage. --$72,000 for energy conservation measures. In these, automatic controls will be put to the heating and cooling systems plus an in-depth study will be made of measures to improve utility conservation. --$7,500 for OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) and architectural barriers removal, which includes making buildings more accessible to the handi capped. When the State Legislature meets again in October. Pembroke State Uni versity is still hopeful of getting $3.6 million for its proposed University Cen ter. said William S. Mason. Jr.. PSU vice chancellor for business affairs. "This University Center is our top priority." said Mason. PSU already has the property upon which to put this facility. The 7.86 acres for it were purchased for $500,000 from the Robe son County Board of Education earlier this year. PLAYRIGHT VISITS 'STRIKE AT THE WIND!' Randolph I mberger I _ _.
