On Friday (Jan. 15) at 8 p.m. Sen. Proxmire will speak ' in the PSU Performing Arts j Center. It will be one of the i highlights of the PSU Lyceum * Series season. i Wisconsin's senior senator. I Proxmire earned his under graduate degree from Yale < University and his Master's Degree in Business Admini stration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business, hie finished cum laude. He ilso earned a Master's De gree from Harvard in Public \dministration. A couple of side notes about Sen. Prosmire: A year or so ago. one of the major networks did a special on his jogging enthusiasm. He was Ithen jogging from home to work regularly. He has also ireceived national attention for hhis hair transplants. He has a fantastic atten dance record in answering ? a. Senate roll call votes. Since April. I960, he has not missed a roll call--and there have been only 7,000. The average senator misses more than 500, according to reports. The State of Wisconsin is well represented by Ptoxmire. Enoch Morris, director of the PSU Performing Arts Center, says there will be a special reception on stage after Proxmire's remarks for him and season subscribers to the PSU Lyceum Series. Edgar Allen Poe COMMENDATION FOR ED "BOOTS"JACOBS Ed "Boot*" Jacob*, a' member of the PSU campus police, has received a special commendation for bravery from the N.C. Assn. of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Last Labor Day, Jacobs came to the aid of the Town of Pembroke police dispatcher when a man had his wife and the dispatcher at gunpoint . d??woW?a-.. with his automatic shotgun. The man had brought his wife to the police station and caught the dispatcher by surprise. In an effort to solve the situation by talking to the man, Jacobs placed his own t'i ^ i? ** "ip pistol on the groand to gain the man's confidence. When the man later reached for Jacobs' pistol, Jacobs struck the man, wrestled the shot gun away and the gunman was quickly subdued by other police officers who had arrived on the scene. As the resolution stated, "Jacobs conducted himself in a manner demonstrative of the highest traditions of law enforcement officers and, be cause of his heroism, is deserving of the respect and admiration of his peers and this organizations." NED SAMPSON, ALL TIME PSU CAGE GREAT, IN HOSPITAL We were distressed to learn that Ned Sampson, one of PSU's all-time basketball greats and a charter member of the University's Athletic Hall of Fame, suffered a recent stroke and has been hospitalized at Moore County Hospital in Southern Pines. A 6-foot-2 forward from 1949-53 at PSU. Ned for 12 years held the school's single game scoring high of 40 points, achieved in 1951. He starred against Duke's Dick Groat in an exhibition game. A real gentleman is Ned Sampson. We pray for his complete recovery. His wife. Eva. is University Nurse. TOMMY SWETT TO RE GUEST ON CHANCELLOR'S ? RADIO SHOW The guest on Chancellor Paul Glvena' weekly radio show will this Sunday be Tommy Swett, director of special programs at PSU. The program, entitled "From The Chancellor's Office," airs at 10:45 a.m. over WAGR in Lumberton. The very personable Swett was recently named co- chair person along with Dr. Norma Jean Thompson of PSU of the North Carolina 2000 planning project in Robeson County. State chairman is President William Friday of UNC. ** NANCY McBRYDE NAMED RED SPRINGS TEACHER OF THE YEAR Mrs. Naacy McBtyde of Maxton has been named the 1981 "Teacher of the Year" of the Red Springs City School System. A 1976 graduate of Pembroke State with a degree in English Education, she earned a certificate in teach ing reading and the gifted and talented. At Red Springs High School, she teaches gifted and talented classes plus English and U.S. History. Mrs. M~9ryde is married to Step he* IcBryde.. .and the mo ther (f two children. BONNIE DEUTSCH COMPLETES WOK ON HER DOCTORATE Bonnie Dentach, who is it. ler first year as instructor in the PSU Art Department, has successfully completed her doctorate in art at Penn State University.
