James Dial, pastor of the Sout Broadway Baptist Church in Baltimore, Mary land. Vonnie Oxendine. Jr. was featured in a profile in the ary 25, 1982. The feature was written by his friend and business associate, Herbert H. Lock)ear. Vonnie and his brother, Craven, for the last four years, have operated the Haven Restaurant and Loun ge in Baltimore, Maryland where he had made his home atace 1953. Vonnie is the son at Mrs. Sadie Oxendine at the Lum berton area. He was a friend to all Robesonians who visited in the Baltimore area. He was always the gracious host and friend to all of us, and never failed to feed us some of his savory dishes, especially his "Savory Rice and Baked Chicken" for which he was acclaimed. We have lost s dear friend. We offer sincere condolences to his family and host of friends, both in Robeson County and Baltimore. Balti more will never be the same without Vonnie, a kind and generous man. Special services will be held Friday at South Broadway Baptist Church in Baltimore where he was a member. Funeral services will be held at Oak Grove Holiness Church here in Robeson County, Sunday, May 9, 1982. My friend, Elmer Hunt, Is home from the hospital I am happy to report that my dear friend. Elmer W. Hunt, is home from Southeas tern General Hospital after an extended stay with influenza and related ills. Friendship is the most prized possession in the world and Elmer W. Hunt is the most helpful friend 1 have ever had. He is kind and generous and nevor fails to help me when I call upon him for a photograph or simply a kind word. Elmer W. Hunt, in my opinion, has done more to publicize the Indian cause than anyone else. His photo graphs have always showcas ed us in the most positive way imaginable. We take him for granted, but we ought not to do that. He is worthy of our applause now while he is in our midst. Most books or articles written about the Lumbee are usually accom panied by an Elmer W. Hunt photo. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We are thankful to Mr. Elmer and his photographs and, most of all, his long standing friend ship. Welcome home, my friend. It's good to have you back in our midst. Now, how about taking me a photograph of.. And another Mend, Ed Johnson, la reportedly running for congress Another friend. Ed John son, who doubles as chairman of the Robeson County Re publican Party, is running for the 7th Congressional seat presently held by Congress man Charlie Rose. I like Ed Johnson. He's bombastic, always interest ing, and 1 only agree with him on about 30% of what he espouses. Still, he's my friend. " But Congressman Ed John son? I don't know about that. ? very good congreaaman. Bat, knowing Ed Johnson like I do, be will more than why I ought to vote for Was. Bat. knowing me Hke I da. they had better be good ones. . Someone once said that "politics make tor strange bedfellows." \ i Is that the case locally where several pig pickings have recently been hosted by local Indian politicos supposedly to support j Hubert Stone for Sheriff and Gary Locklear for judge? It is well known that Gary Locklear will receive virtually all of the Indian vote in the upcoming primary. Does Mr. Locklear need the support of Mr. Stone In the Indian community or does Stone . need such support from Locklear? It Mr. Stone is sincere in his apparent support for Mr. Locklear, then why has he not organized such functions among 11 his supporters in the white or black communities just as he and his deputies have done so In the Indian community? Can it be that these Indian allies of Stone are willing to sacrifice a seemingly electable Indian judicial candidate simply to save Stone from what Increasingly appears to be certain defeat? Noble has supported Rep resentative Dan Lilly's legis lation to increase personal deductions in North Carolina State income tax. This will give a small reduction in taxes across the board to everyone, while at the same time opposing the total elimination of taxes for powerful special interest groups. Reduction in taxes should be shared by everyone.
