Many clean-up and home maintenance joba present potential hazards to the eyes. An estimated 1.3 mil lion Americans suffer eye injuries each year. In fact, more accidents resulting in impaired vision?some 45 percent?occur around the home than anywhere else. Up to 90 percent of these injuries can be avoided. According to the National Society to Prevent Blindness, you can lower the risk of eye damage by using pro tective eyewear and taking a few safety precautions. First, check out the kit chen and bathroom. Serious eye damage is often caused by household chemicals ? cleaners containing harsh agents such as ammonia and lye, adhesives and glues, pesticides and fertilizers used in the garden. Before using any product, read the package labels and instruc tions thoroughly, paying special attention to warn ings. Most importantly, use eye-protectors when work ing with dangerous products. Young children imitating their elders are especially vulnerable to eye injury from household products. Store them high up or locked away, and supervise children closely when such products are in use. Next check out the home workshop or garage. Hand tools and power equipment such as drills, hammers and chain saws throw off chips, splinters, rocks and other pieces that can severely harm the eyes. Lawn mow ers are also a frequent cause of eye injuries, because they can propel stones with tre mendous force into your eye or someone else's. It's best to wear goggles when operating such equipment. If strong chemicals should contact the eyes, flush them with water immediately and continue for 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek a doctor right away.
