TEACHES NUTRITION CLASS Mr*. Merelene Oxendine, Lunchroom Manager at Pem broke Elementary School, taught a nutrition dan to the students of Mrs. Mary S. Chavis, 3rd grade teacher. She stressed the importance of eating food each day from the five basic food groups. She said that maintaining good health should be the number one thought in the minds of the children, and stressed that a proper diet is not only essential for good health but the sleeping habits can also improve with a balanced diet. This selection was made by the faculty and 'staff. Ms. Chavis will repre sent Pembroke Junior High in local competition for "Robe son County Teacher of the Year." Thomas Earl Locklear, the Principal, expressed his pride in the faculty's selection of Ms. Chavis. Locklear stated, "I am confident that Mrs. Chavis will become District Teacher of the Year." Mrs. Chavis is in her sixth year as Educably Mentally Handicapped teacher at Pem broke Junior High. In addition to serving as chairman of the EMH department, or the "exceptional children," as she so fondly refers to them, Mrs. Chavis also teaches history and math in the 8th and 9th grades for exceptional children. Her teaching career includ es nine years at Union Ele mentary School as EMH teacher and fourth and fifth grade; at Rex Rennert and Ashpole Schools she taught ) first grade. Her teaching career began at Green Grove ? School where she taught first grade. Mrs. Chavis has also taught Headstart prior to the addition of the kindergarten program. Mrs. Chavis is a graduate of Pembroke State College. She earned a B.S. degree there. Additional training in cludes certification in excep tional children (grades 1-12) reading and speech, primary 1-3. Mrs. Chavis' professional service includes serving on three national committees of the National Association of Educators. She'serves on the following committees: Minor ity Affairs; Human Relations and the Women's Training Cadre. She is a member of the State Board of Director* at Large of the North Carolina Association of Educators. For that organization she is a member of the American Indian Task Force, the Edu cational Hall of Fame; and the Finance and Personnel Com mittee. She presently serves as the President of the Bobeson County Assodaton of Class room Teachers; and chairman of the Constitution Committee of the Robeson County North Carolina Association of Edu cators. *he is chair person of the NX. Consortium, the organization which speaks to the Title IV Indian Education issue. She serves also on the Parent Committee for the Robeson County Indian Education Program. In addition, Mrs. Chavia serves as a part time instruc tor for Robeson Technical College. As such she teaches adult classes two nights a week at Pembroke Junior High. Mrs. Carrie Mable Jones serves as Chairperson of the Teacher of the Year Commit tee at Pembroke Junior High. That committee hosted a reception in honor at Mrs. Chavis on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the school. At this time Mrs. Chavis was presented a plaque denoting her position as Teacher of the Year at PJH. Mrs. Chavis had the follo wing comments related to teaching: "I always wanted to become a teacher because of my home training. Also be cause of my respect for my teachers. They were inspira tional to me during my schooling. I believe that the volunteer program is an asset to the teaching profession. The more people are involved, the better schools we'll have.' Mrs. Chavis and her hus band, George Chavis, a retir ed school teacher, reside in Pembroke.
