Mi Sports 8 #1 Clipboard FKMBROKE STATE I Sports i By Gary Spitfcr Spons information Director J GARRY HENRY SELECTED AS NAIA ATHLETE OF THE YEAR; TO BE HONORED SUNDAY Garry Henry, Pembroke State University track and cross countiy star from 1976 through 1982, will be honored Sunday and awarded "Na tional Association of Inter collegiate Athletics Athlete of the Year in North Carolina" for 1982. Henry was selected the North Carolina Association of Sports Broadcasters, with 110 members in the organization. i The recipients will be honored 1 at the NCASB Annual Awards I Banquet at the Ramada Inn in ? Burlington on Sunday even ling. May 1st, at 6:30 p.m. The award will be accepted II by Pembroke State Head Track and Cross Country i Coach Larry Rodgers who ?'coached Henry during the i 1982 season. I "First I consider it a great 3 honor to accept this award on ? behalf of Garry Henry and ? Pembroke State University," " commented Coach Rodgers. "It is only once in a lifetime that an individual can accept this kind of award and it is important what the- award stands for. He would have been honored to accept this honor himself." Henry, a native of Aus tralia, was unable to return to the United States to receive the honor since returning to his native country. Also recognized and honor ed at the banquet will be the NA1A Coach of the Year for 1982, Sam Moir of Catawba who has led the Indians to many basketball triumphs at Catawba. Moir led the Indians to the 1983 Carolines Con ference Basketball Cham pionship. Other honorees include the North Carolina High School Football Coach and Athletes of the Year. Garry Henry left his mark at Pembroke State University. The Australian native dashed to 15 First-Team AU-Ameri can titles, five national cham pionship laurels, and twice was selected "Carolines Con ference Athlete of the Year" while at Pembroke State. In 1982, Henry won cham pionship banners at the NA1A National Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meters and set a new national record running the event in 29:30.76. He also won the national championship title in the 5,000 meters helping pace Pembroke State to a third place team finish ai the NA1A National meet. In 1980. Henry waf a two time All-American: as he helped pace PSU to a Rational Runner-up spot at the NCAA Division J1 Cross Country Championships. Henry won the NCAA II National fctle and then finished a. remarkable sixth at the N?AA Division 1 National meet. - i' Pacing PSU to the National Championship in 1978, Henry took second in the NAIA meet in cross country and then at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships. Henry won All-Aiaew<.an honors in both the 5,000 andi 10,000 meters. Likewise, tae sleek runner placed on boti events at the 1979 NCAA Dvision II Nationals, thus fife ail American honors in his junior year. Among his triutqgfrs in 1977, Henry won the NAIA National Cross Country Championship in record time (24:11) over the five-mile course. He captured the 5,000 and 10,000 meter National Championships in the NALA in 1978 and then was second in the NCAA 11 10.000 meter run. Thus he swept three national championships and was AU-American four times in 1977-78. As a freshman, Henry finished second in the 1977 NAIA 10,000-meter run and seventh in the 1976 NAIA National cross country meet. Those represent two more All-American laurels. . V Henry ended his fine career at PSU in 1982 graduating holding the national records in the 10.000 meters in the NAlA and NCAA II. His clocking of 29:32.0 in Keno sha. Wis. in 1980 set the new national mark in the NCAA Division II while the NAlA's new mark of 29:30.76 was set in Charleston. W. Va. in 1982. a Henry also ran in the Japan Marathon in December 1980 and posted the sixth best time in the world in the marathon two hours, 10 minutes, and .09 seconds. This also set a college world record. PEMBROKE STATE CLAIMS SEVENTH STRAhVi CAROUNAS CONFERENCE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP Pembroke State Univers ity claimed the 1983 Carolinas Conference Track Champion ship here last week scoring 123 points in the champion ship meet. Claiming second place team honors was Elon College with 30 points while High Point took third with 27. Pembroke State claimed first-place honors in 16 of the ? 17 events. Named "Most Valuable Performer in the Field Events" was Elon Col lege's Fred Jordan. Jordan won the shot put with a toss of 46" 7 1/2", took second in the high jump with a leap of 6' 6", and third in the long jump with a measurement of 21' 8". "Most Valuable Runner" was awarded to Pembroke Slate's George Pone, winner in the 100 meters. 200 meters, and a member of the winning 400 meter relay team. Pembroke State University Coach Larry Rodgers was voted "Conch of the Year."
