School of the Arts, Milligan, Gardner Webb, Brevard School of the Arts, and Pembroke State University. The summer programs are sponsored by the Title IV Indian Education Project of the Robeson County Schools, and is being coordinated by Mr. Donald Locklear. There are 20 students who are attending Mars Hill. BAND PROGRAM HAS SUCCESSFUL YEAS The Robeson County In dian Youth Band, under the direction of Joseph M. Lock lear and sponsored by the Title IV Indian Education Project has had a very suc cessful school year. During the month of May, the Band will be giving its annual Spring Concert as well as the first promotional band tour of the county schools. The purpose of the tour is to promote musical interest within the students of the County Schools and to en hance the persona] satisfac tion of those students who are performing. Following is a schedule of all the concert dates, place and times: ?May 9, 1983-Union Chapel School Gym, 7:30 p.m. ?May 11, 1983--Piney Grove School gym, 9:30 a.m. ?Magnolia School Gym, 12:30 p.m.; ?Union Chapel School Gym, 1:45 p.m. ?May 12, 1983?Rowland Middle School Gym, 9 a.m.; ?Fairgrove School Gym, 10:30 a.m.; ?Prospect School Gym, 2 p.m. ?May 13, 1983?Pembroke Middle School Gym, 9:30 a.m.; *Rex Renncrt School Gym, 12:30 p.m. LOCAL TEACHERS REPRESENT COUNTY SCHOOLS Ms. De lores Jones, Spa nish teacher at Pembroke Senior High, and Ms. Sandra Graham, Spanish teacher at Littlefield Senior High, re presented the Robeson Coun ty School system at a Foreign Language Total liners ion at Camp Carroway in Asheboro, April 23rd and 24th. There were only two lan guages spoken at the Camp Spanish and French. The two Robeson County participants were allowed to speak in Spanish only. Ms. Jones and Ms. Graham had the opportunity to con verse with natives of Chili, Argentina, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. The trip was educational, and the local teachers were able to exchange ideals, and to gain more insight into the teaching of Spanish. During the week of May 11-15, the Spanish students and cleases of Ms. Delores Jooes at Pembroke Senior High School observed Foreign Language Week. A number of activities were planned and include the ffoi (I) The Spanish IDCUa did cadet teaching at Wouderland Chid Center in Pembroke, going there twice a weak and teaching 4 and 5 year olds in the arena of greeting, name, numbers, colors, etc. and i (2) May 12th and 13th The Spanish Department con ducted a Language Fair con sisting of homemade projects, authentic souveniers and dis plays. During those two days the Spanish students also did teaching projects and gave culture lessons. (3) May 12th was Spanish Night which consisted of combined classes doing skits and commercials, songs and dances, and a little bit of everything as long as it was Spanish oriented. (This pro gram was at 7:30 in the school gym). (4) May 14th a Bike-athon will be held as a fund raiser to obtain funds for Twilla Jacobs for her exchange trip this summer. At the end of the month, the Spanish classes of Ms. Jones will be giving a going away party for their exchange students. SPECIAL PROGRAM AT SMITHS/ALLENTON Herbert Battle, a special agent with the State Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, presented a special program on drugs and alcohol at Smiths/Allenton School on Wednesday, May 4th. He spoke to all the fifth grade students, and told them about his job and how he worked in undercover situ ations to arrest people who were using or selling drugs illegally and minors who were involved with alcohol. Examples of different types of drugs were passed around (in sealed plastic containers) for the students to view, and the students were instructed by Mr. Battle that if they came into contact with them, or had brothers or sisters who were involved with them, to leave them alone, because they could get in a lot of trouble with the law. She joined about 2,000 rosturned guests from across he state. The Garden Party ncluded a seven course din icr and 16-Century enter ainment by madrigal singing roupes, sword fighters and a larpischordist. The Garden 'arty was followed by an ivening drama production of iheakespeare's "A Mid iummer Night's Dream." Among the guests were ligh school students from icross the state, including 89 tudents from Magnolia, *rospect.
