MISS LUMBEE TO PARTICIPATE IN MISS N.C. PAGEANT Rhonda Flanagan Miss Lumbee Rhonda Flanagan, is well on her way toward reaching her goal of participating in the Miss North Carolina Pageant to be held June 22-25 in Raleigh. NC. Rhonda and her chaperone and business manager. Mrs. Florence Ran som, have completed their work on Rhonda's wardrobe and talent selections and look forward to leaving Sunday for a busy week of state competition in Raleigh. Miss Lumbee will be living on the campus of Peace College with 47 other young ladies from across the state who will bevying for the title of Miss North Carolina. Rhonda will be competing in three areas in the pageant. The swimsuit competition is Wednesday. June 22, with talent competition scheduled for June 23 and evening gown competition scheduled 1 for June 24. Final competition for the state title will be Saturday night, June 25. 1983. Miss Lumbee has traveled extensively throughout the state and made numerous personal appearances during her reign. One of the highlights of her year was her performance at the National Congress of American Indians Convention n Washington, D.C. This special appear ance afforded Rhonda the opportunity to showcase her vocal talents before Indian people from across the nation. Rhonda is the 22 year ok) daughter of Ms. Magnolia Flanagan and resides in the Prospect Community. She is cur rently the owner and operator of New Image Hair Studio in Pembroke. N.C. Everyone is invited to attend the state finals in Raleigh and provide moral support to the reigning Miss Lumbee. MEMBER INFORMATION NIGHTS Lumbee River EMC invites all members to "Member Information Nights." The purpose of the meetings is for members to talk with the coopera tive's administrative staff, get an update on the organization, and to ask ques tions. The meeting will be at Lumbee River EMC Main Office on Hwy. 211, June 16; O.P. Owens Center in Lumber ton, June 23; Lake Rim District Office on Hwy 401. Fayetteville. June 30; and the American Legion Building in Wagram on July 7. The meetings will be from 7:30-9 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. FOURTH ANNUAL INDIAN YOUTH UNITY CONFERENCE The Fourth. Annual Jn<Ji|tl> YoRfh .. Unity Conference has been scheduled for June 22-24,1983 at N.C. State University and is expected to attract hundreds of Indian Youth from across the state. Students between the ages of 14 and 18 will meet to share ideas and concerns about issues that affect the lives of all Indian youth focusing on the conference theme. "Indian Youth in Two Worlds." Workshops will include such topics as leadership, personal development, and improving the self-actualization of Indian youth. The Conference is sponsored by the North Carolina Native American Youth Organization (NCNAYO). Officers of the NCNAYO will be elected during the Conference. Estab lished in June of 1980. the organization unites young people from the Five tribes and three Indian urban organizations. Jamie Oxendine of Laurinburg is the current NCNAYO chairperson. Special features of the Conference include an art and essay contest, a talent show on Wednesday night, June 23 and a banquet and dance on Thursday night, June 24. Hunt, Jr., has proclaimed the third week of September as Indian Heritage Week for North Carolina. This year the celebration will be held September 18-24, 1983. The observance of Indian Heritage Week offers the Indian people of the state an opportunity to come together to celebrate their heritage, while at the same time enlightening the general North Carolina population. In 1980 an official Indian Heritage Week poster was designed. This has been used for the last three years. We need a new poster for 1983 to announce the Fourth Annual Indian Heritage Week Celebration. Therefore, we are encouraging Indian artists from across the state to submit entries for a poster contest. The winning entry will be the official 1983 Indian Heritage Week Poster. The artwork should reflect N.C. Indian Culture and Heritage ttoyrs bestowpAwM the printing and dismbution of the poster across the state and a presentation of the poster to the State of North Carolina. Entries must be in pencil or pen and ink. Approximate size should be 18" x 24". Entries must be received no later than July 1. 1983. Juging will be held July 6. 1983 in Raleigh. BAPTIST CHURCHES COLLECT SPECIAL OFFERING Churches in Burnt Swamp Associa tion will collect a special Father's Day Offering. Sunday. June 18. for a Christian Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established in 1981 to (1) Assist the proclamation of the gospel. (2) encour age the equipping of church members and (3) provided a medium of training for Christian ministry.
