EXTENSION
SERVICE
..a ? ? *
During the pest year we
have had a large increase in
the numbers ef inquiries
coming to the Extension Of
fice for information on forage
crops. Even though we have
? ? *
not seen much growth in our
local cattle industry, we have
noted a trend of increasing
demand for hay and an in
creasing interest in quality
hay production. Another rea
son for the increasing interest
in forage crops also may
center on the exasperation
that many farmers have faced
during th* past few -
they have attempted to grow
top crops on marginal land
and have failed more often
than they have succeeded.
Coastal Bermuda is the
predominant warm-season
perennial that U grown in this
area whilfc fescue is the
predominant cool-season per
ennial that is grown locally.
While new developments in
fescue production tave been
essentially nil for many years,
there are now promising new
varieties which will likely
become the standard fescue
varieties in the near future.
Forager is a new variety that
was developed for FCX which
hat coaiistently produced
higher yields during the past
few years than the more
popular Kentucky 31 which
has been around for a long
time.
In the warm-season per
ennial area, there are two
entirely new grasses that
appear to be on the horizon
and are producing some ex
citing results in field research
trials. Two of those grasses
are switchgrass and Flaccid
grass. Switchgrass is a native
perennial, tall growing grass
that is adapted throughout
North Carolina and has pro
duced daily gains in cattle
significantly greater than
more popular grasses that are
currently being grown. It is
also characteristically a fast
spring grower and has been
available for grazing by mid
April.
Flaccidgrass is the other
exciting grass crop which is a
very high forage producer and
well adapted to all areas of the
state. It is a perennial with a
bunchgrass appearance, and
normally begins growth two to
four weeks earlier than Coas
tal Bermuda. One of its most
outstanding features is that it
has performed well under
lower rates of nitrogen than is
normally required by Coastal
Bermuda.
These two grasses are cur
rently being evaluated by
researchers at North Carolina
State University, and even
though these trials are show
ing considerable promise for
both of these grasses. Flac
cidgrass especially, must be
studied for a few more years
prior to release in order for all
of its' characteristics to be
studied and well known so
that any potential pest prob
lems, digestibility problems,
or other types of problems
which may arise will have an
opportunity to show them
selves. This is necessary in
order to avoid a premature
release which could ultimately
create serious problems on
farms.
Anyone who may be inter
ested in additional informa
tion regarding the digesti
bility, crude protein levels,
and other characteristics of
these grasses should call the
County Extension Office at
738-8111.

carpet^cutIieating cost
With the rapidly rising cost of heating fuel and the
diminishing world supply, there are very few of us who are
not aware of the need to conserve energy. It's a
consideration when it comes to buying almost anything
from cars to carpets.
We all know that carpets are warm to walk on, but they
also help insulate our houses and keep them warm. If your
house has no basement or an unhealed basement,
carpeting the floors over these cold areas will cut down on
heat loss. You'll save'money because your heating system
won't have to work as hard to maintain the desired room
temperature.
Simply stated, carpeting and undercarpet padding
insulate your house from below, just as the insulation in
your attic insulates it from the cold air above. It can also
insulate between floors and save you money if. like many
homeowners, you have installed or plan to install zone
heating.
Though any carpet can insulate, one with a thick, dense
pile will do the most effective job.
