In the January 1984 issue of
tgrichemkal Age there was a
'ivid picture and explanation
>f a rather extensive research
>roject that was conducted in
Wisconsin on organic produc
ion of vegetables. The study
rompared four crops-sweet
?orn. cabbage, peppers, and
omatoes-grown under or
ganic conditions and the same
crops grown under modern
nsect control methods. All of
he plots were machine culti
?ated. hand weeded, or hoed
or weed control. The only
lifference between the test
ilots was the organic plots
eceived no insect control
reatments, while the other
dots under normal conditions
vere treated with insecti
cides.
The results showed that
vithout the use of the insecti
?ides. all of the vegetables
except the tomatoes were
lamaged significantly. The
iweetc in the-" n ? plots
fforr ?" nfilled
nsect
.ig - to 3
lercetit d ge v the pro
ected car
Cabbage yields were also
lrastically reduced on un
reated heads. The average
head weight dropped from 3.5
pounds in the insect controll
ed plots to 1.7 pounds in the
organic plots, but only 0.78
pounds of each cabbage head
in the organic plots was
usable compared to 3.36
pounds per head of treated
cabbage.
Even though these figures
are fairly dramatic, green
peppers even showed more
dramatic decline in yield.
Even though plant size and
foliage of treated and un
treated peppers were nearly
identical, most of the un
treated plants failed to pro
duce any peppers at all. The
yield for each 10 plants
dropped from 23 ounces on
the regular plots to 1.5 ounces
on the organic plots.
Tomatoes fared well in the
study; largely because Wis
consin tomatoes are usually
not subject to many insect
problems, since most tomato
losses in that area are attri
butable to fungus disease.
I have shared this infor
mation to make a point about
agricultural chemicals. It is a
generally accepted attitude
that our food supply could be
drastically reduced if chemi
cals were not available in
agriculture. Over the years
insecticides that have been
shown to persist in the en
vironment have summarily
I been banned, while other
insecticides which are very
[effective yet break down
rapidly are now the order of
the day in agriculture.
Naturally, regardless of the
use that is made of farm
chemicals, it is imperative for
all users to know the exact
rates and other characteristics
of a particular chemical. This
information is available in the
1984 North Carolina Agri
cultural Chemical* Manual,
and this agricultural chem
icals manual may be pur
chased for $7.50 a copy at the
County Extension Office. The
manual is a 285-page booklet
that includes information on
safety, application, specimen
identification, insect control,
disease control, fruit disease
and insect control, chemical
weed control, plant growth
regulators, .fertilizer use, an
imal control, and other infor
mation about poison control
centers in North Carolina.
Even though we normally
distribute about 50 copies of
the agricultural chemicals
manual each year. I believe
that with the increasing cost
of farm chemicals and the
numerous combinations that
are now available, that it
would be wise for anyone who
?uses agricultural chemicals to
make the $7.50 investment in
the I964^&ricultural chemi
cals manual.
