CLUBHOUSE BURNS AGAIN
Frankie's Family Steakhouse
Helps in Time of Trouble
The Pembroke Jaycee Clubhouse
burned Friday, February 10, 1984. It was
a loss not only to the members of the
Jaycee organization, but also to Pem
broke and surrounding communities.
The Jaycees had planned a Valentine's
Dance for Saturday, February 11, 1984.
After expenses of the dance were paid, a
donation was to be made to the family of
a child who is suffering from a long-term
terminal illness. The donation was to
help with the mounting medical expen
ses facing the family.
On Saturday morning, members of the
Jaycee Club received calls from indi
viduals who had purchased tickets asking
that their money be returned.
Realizing initial expenditures had
already been made and could not be
returned, members of the club began a
search for a place to accomodate the
planned party.
Several places were sighted, but in the
end Frankie s Family Steakhouse and
Seafood (formerly Revels' Fish Camp)
was chosen. Frankie and Elsie Locklear
offered to close their business, allowing
time for the Jaycees and Jaycettes to
decorate and prepare for the dance. They
also offered the place rent-free to the
Jaycees as well as bearing the expenses
for some refreshments.
The kindness and concern for our
plight as an organization is something
that can never be repaid to Frankie and
Elsie. They offered us a chance to cut our
loss by sharing it with us and supporting
us throughout the day of struggling to
make an 8 p.m. deadline.
We, the Jaycees and Jaycettes thank
you Frankie and Elsie. And to all our
friends and supporters we ask you to go
by and thank them for their concern and
generosity.

Family Dollar opens
707th store in Pembroke
Family Dollar Store opened its 707th
store in Pembroke last Thursday.
Given the honor of cutting the ribbon
at the grand opening was Pembroke
Mayor Milton Hunt, shown in photo
above, second from left.
Lumbee Bank President James A.
Hunt and a large turnout of towns people
joined Condley Beasley, Store Manager
and other Family Dollar officials, in
cluding Jesse Hilburn. Store Opening
Manager, Evelyn Walters, District Man
ager, and Regional Manager Ben Pierce
who participated in the exciting event.
The store will carry a complete line of
merchandise for the family and home,
including clothing and shoes, health and
beauty aids, housewares, school sup

plies, candy, toys, paint and auto
supplies.
Family Dollar was founded in 1959
with a single store in Charlotte, N.C. and
today has more than 4,673,339 square
feet of total sales space in the chain's 707
stores.
The company presently operates in the
two Carolinas, Georgia, Mississippi,
Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia,
West Virginia, Maryland, Arkansas,
Louisiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

Center are located in Charlotte, North

SEAN JONES SERVING'
AS PAGE IN US CONGRESS
Sean Jones Is shown with Congress
man Charlie Base. Jones is the first
student to serve as page from the 16th
Congressional District.
Sean Is the son of the Rev. and Mrs.
Steve Jones of Pembroke. He will serve
as a Page in Washington, D.C. until
June, 1984. At that time he will return to
West Robeson Senior High School to
complete his senior year. Sean's future
plans include attending Wake Forest
University where he will study law.
Sean was recommended for the
appointment as Page by Adolph Pial,
Chairman of the American Indian
Studies Department at Pembroke State
University.
Chavis challenges for seat
on County Board of Education
Larry W. Chavis, Sr.
Larry W. Chavis, Sr. has announced
his candidacy lor a seat on the Robeson
County Board of Education. He has filed
for election to District VI. comprised of
Thompson. Back Swamp and Gaddys
Precincts.
Chavis is the son of Mrs. Mable Chavis
Carter, and grandson of Mrs. Allie Fair
Chavis, both of Lumberton, and the late
William (Boyd) Chavis. He is also the
grandson of Rev. and Mrs. Arbor
Oxendine of Fairmont. He is married to
Mary F. Chavis and they have four
children: Larry, Jr., 14; Theresa, 11; and
Anna. 9. They attend Fahgrove School.
Michelle. 5. attends Green grove School.
They live near Highway 301. about 2
mOes south of Hilly Branch. *
He is an employee of Boise Cascade.
Inc. as a production management
trainee. where he has been employed six
years. He and his wife are the owners of
Chavis Studio of Music.

graduated from Fairgrove High School.
He spent three years in the United States
Marine Corps. Chavis received his
A.A.S. Degree in Business Adminis
tration at Robeson Technical College,
and is presently a senior in the

He is a member of Reedy Branch
Baptist Church where he serves as an
Adult Sunday School teacher, choir
director. Brotherhood director, and a
member of the Community Action
Committee.
He was president of the Fairgrove
branch of the Lumbee Longhouse
Learning Center Parent Association for
the 1982-83 school year..

TRAINING COURSE AT
BURNT SWAMP PHILADELPHUS
RURAL FIRE DEPARTMENT
There will be a training course at the
Burnt Swamp Philadelphus Rural Fire
Department, Feb. 22, March 7, March 21
and April 4, 1984. The hours will be from
7-10 p.m. each night. Anyone interested
in the training course should attend
these classes. The classes will be held at
the Burnt Swamp Philadelphus Fire
Department near Buie. The instructor
will be Lt. Britt from Robeson Technical
College.

crats Installation and Awards Banquet

CENTER DRAMA CLASS SPONSORS
BEAUTY PAGEANT
The Drama Class at the Robeson
County Career Center is sponsoring a
womanless beauty pageant, the Junior
Senior MISS-te* Pageant Saturday.
February 25. at t p.m. in the Magnolia
School gym. There will be approximately
15 male "beauties" representing the six
Robeson County high schools. Admission
will be S3 for adults and students, S2.
Come out and be entertained. If you've
never seen a womanless beauty pageant,
you've missed some of the biggest
laughs you'll ever have!
LAUBACH WORKSHOP FOR TUTORS
The Robeson County Literacy Coun
cil of the Robeson County Church and
Community Center will sponsor a
Laubach Workshop for Tutors on March
6, 8, 13 and 15 from seven until ten p.m.
at Robeson Technical College. The
sessions will be taught by Mrs. Anne
Tyndall, Director of the Scotland County
Literacy Council. AH interested persons
are invited to attend.

ADULT COACHES SOUGHT
The Robeson County Recreation and
Park Commission is looking for adult
coaches interested in volunteering their
time to coach a Sth and 6th grade soccer
team. Knowledge of the sport is not a
necessity. A workshop will be held in the
basics of this fast growing sport. For

Union Elementary School will hold a
PTA meeting on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Following a short business meeting,
parents are invited to view the science
fair projects which will be on display in
the media center. Teachers will also be

ROWLAND MAN
SHOT TO DEATH
MAXTON--A Rowland man was killed
Sunday from a shotgun blast to the upper
body, according to area news reports.
According to the report, Cordia
"Pete" Oxendine. 49. was shot from
close distance in the neck, chest and face
but still managed to run a half mile for
help before he collapsed and died.
The report stated that members of die
Maxton Rescue Squad treated Oxendine
at a residence near Clark Shopping
Center on Old Red Springs Highway
about a mile outside of Maxton.
According to Bill Yarborough. chief of -
the Maxton Rescue Squad. Oxendine
was shot at a trailer home off the
Reservation Road near Maxton. Yarbo
rough stated Oxendine collapsed about
2:30 p.m. after he ran across a plowed
field, the report said.
Neighbors reported the incident to
emergency officials, the report stated.
