^EPedit OR I A L\ Hnd oPiNiom Vw? Cannot Know Whara Wa Ara Qolng \ ? If Wa Don't Know Whara WO'va Baan... ? So fittingly we honor our Pioneer Fathers ! as i i ? see it by , Bruce Barton "RANDY MAYNOR WAS A SPECIAL MAN..." Said Mrs. Iris Graham at Deep Branch Baptist Church Monday night during revival services as she asked us to remember his grieving family in prayer. And we did. Like many others, Mrs. Graham remembered Randy Maynor's gentle ways, his booming smile, his unhurried pace through life. He made' one comfortable, at ease, gentle. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. She remembered him as "a special man. one who always took time to say something kind. He was just a wonder ful. unique person..." It was hard to count the crowd because they spilled out of the auditorium at Deep Btanch Elementary School into the yard at Randy's funeral last Sunday. They came to pay their respects to a friendly man who died at the age of 27 Friday when he ran into a train on Rural Paved Road 1573, some eight miles west of Lumberton. It is estimated that more than 1.200 friends and family at tended the solemn services. Trooper Hear! Oxendine speculated. "He was travel ing too fast, couldn't stop in time...apparently he just came up there and didn't see the train." Randy James Maynor leav es to mourn his passing his parents. James Maynor and Mrs. Lucy Maynor. both of Lumberton; two brothers, James H. Maynor and Carson Maynor, both of Route 4. Lumberton; two sisters, Mrs. Linda Locklear of Route 6, Lumberton and Mrs. Brenda G. Jones of Route 1, Pem broke. and a host of family and friends. Maynor was a charter member of the Mount Airy Jaycees and vice president in charge of Jamestown Enter prises. But he will mostly be remembered for his laughter, his, gentle ways, his friend liness. An old Saying *notfcs, "One must be friendly to have friends." And. God knows. Randy James Maynor had friends. We all mourn his passing and offer heartfelt condo lences to his family. The Rev. Tommy Gist and the Rev. Michael Cummings conducted the service, with a moving eulogy by family friend Pete Covington. Burial followed in Burnt Swamp Church Cemetery. Capital A ideas There are nearly a dozen bills in both houses of Con gress dealing with the sub ject of acid rain. F . t -Vv JU-?-r ? ? ? A common feature of many of these bills is that the greatest share of the emission cutbacks proposed would come from the coal using states of the Midwest. With acid rain impacts oc curring in the Northeast, the effectiveness of such schemes is far from assured. ? ? ? Another serious problem with such legislation is that it could be economically disruptive. Tens of thou sands of jobs could be lost and electric power costs would rise. The snow-capped Bhutan, north of India, issued a postage stamp that is actual ly a tiny phonograph rec ord. It plays the Bhutanese national anthem. Letters 5 Standards of /\ Education in Robeson says writer The name of Eric Prevatte's group denotes double stan dards in education in Robeson County. If one should add Red Springs. St. Pauls and Fair mont to Ci^nbe rton-Robeson (County math science educa tion committee one comes up with S standards of education in Robeson County. This is 'like buying 8 spark plugs for a four cylinder engine. You're stuck with 4 you don't need. Any one of the 30,000 un educated persons Eric Pre vatte and Fred Williams con tinue to brag about residing in Robeson County could tell us this. Any one of the 30,000 persons of which Prevatte and Williams speak of can tell one that mixing business and industry with education is not the answer to and or for better education in Robeson County. The main objective of busi ness and industry is to make money for business and in dustry. Improvement in edu cation has to come from within the school system instead of special interest groups from outside in my opinion. Eric Prevatte and Fred Williams speak of 30,000 uneducated persons in Rob eson County in a degrading manner in my opinion. If Eric Prevatte and Fred Williams were and still are so anxious for better education in Robe son County why are there still 30,000 uneducated persons in Robeson County? Fred Wil liams claims RTC is turning out 9,500 certificates and degrees each year. Fred, how could you possibly miss out on bringing these 30,000 persons out of the bondage of igno rance? In my opinion Fred William nor Eric Prevatte knows how to deal with this situation. In my opyiion it is shallow thinking that continues to take students from their respective high schools to RTC and RCCCHB for training they should receive at their res pective schools. Returning to one school system in Robeson County is the only road to successful better education in Robeson County. It is nothing more than politics at its worst operational performance that created this situation in Rob eson County. These 5 school systems in Robeson County are each jockeying for the number one spot in every phase except in the realm and reality of better education in Robeson County, in my opin ion. Parents and grandpar ents, our children and grand children are being denied and deprived of total exposure to better education because nar row minded, brofcd beamed persons are influenced by varied school district lines and puppetized politicians, who are dictating policy and sup posedly guide lines. Parents and grandparents, let's pro test loud and long against this dastardly practice in Robeson County. John L, Godwin Pembroke, N.C. * , ; >* R Remember fofc: Tbeee views an nbt. They ANTING I **" bAVING with I ' WHEN THE HEAT'S ON I NEED A FAN! At last count, I had a grand total of eleven fans (counting my pet dog Fido), who claim they read my rantings and ravings religiously. Wow! Now, folk, admittedly, most of these probably pat me on the back out of a sense of pity more than anything else. But still, when the heat's on, it's good to have a fan. Well, heaven, knows I'd love to be able to boast of having an even dozen fans out there (not counting Fido who I'd love to be able to eliminate from among this group of elite solely to appease my conscience that has bothered me since I included him in the first place). So let me warn you ten (and Fido): Though y'all are probably used to me ranting and raving about light subject matter, this week, once again, I want to share a few more thoughts on capital punishment and abortions -actually sort of a continuation of last week's column. So, please folk. If you think your patience might be taxed somewhat by another week of serious stuff, for God's (and my) sake! Don't desert me. Fans are hard to come by. Just don't read this week's column if you feel the need. But be sure and tune back in next week. Seriously! I don't handle rejection too well. (Hey! 1 ain't above playing on people's pity to get them to read this stuff.) Now, for the hearty among you, I'll get to the point. I believe what bothers me most is the manner in which James W. Hutchins met his doom. If you recall, Hutchins was executed recently (the first in N.C. in a heck-of-a long time) for murdering 3 jaw enforcement officers. From what I have been able to gather, I have the impression that prison officials administered a lethal injection into Hutchins' body. Although it has been emphasized countless times that a doctor did not administer the injection, 1 still detect a bit of hypocrisy. You see, common sense tells me that a doctor had to train or supervise or counsel the officials who did administer the lethal injection. And no doubt he knew what he was training them for. I mean, folk 1 have seen trained practicing nurses and doctors (who did it for a living) have trouble beginning an IV. The hypocrisy I mention has to do with the "Hippocratic Oath" doctors take before beginning the practice of medicine. The "Hippocratic Oath" is so named after Hippocrates who is known as the Father of Medicine. It goes something like this: "To none will I give a deadly drug, even if solicited, nor offer counsel to such an end..." Now, Bubba: Let's be realistic. Admitted ly, a doctor did not kill Hutchins by 'administering the lethal injection, but in my eyes, and in the eyes of our judicial system, he is just as guilty as the ones who did administer the lethal injection by virtue of the fact he no doubt offered counsel, supervised or assisted in the deadly administering of the drug. And by so doing, that doctor made a "hypocritic oath" of the aforementioned "Hippocratic Oath" he took. You see, ol' Webster says hypocrisy is "a deception as to real character and feeling, especially in regard to morals and religion." Now, let me step on some more people's feet. The "Hippocratic Oath" doctors take also vows: "...and no woman will 1 give a destructive suppository, but guiltless and hallowed will I keep my art." Bubba. please! 1 hate to be the one to bring this unpleasant subject up, but one of the many deadly methods of aborting a fetus (baby) is to inject a chemical solution into the womb of the mother. This "destructive suppository," literally speaking, burns the baby to death. So, as far as 1 am concerned, the doctors who perform the more than 4.000 abortions nationwide daily are not only murderers, in my eyes, but hypocrites as well. You make your own deductions and form your own opinions on the subject. I have made mine known. Think about the deadly outcome if Hitler had been smart enough to use legalized abortions to annihilate the Jewish race. It's frightening to consider the consequences. You see. Hitler murdered more than 6,000,000 Jews before being stopped. The primary reason he was toppled was because of public outcry against his barbaric methods of murdering Jews, such as gassing them and burning them in flaming incenerators. Now, folk: there have been more than 10,000,000 babies murdered in the United States since abortions became legal. But the main difference in this barbaric practice and Hitler's methods is that public outrage and outcry are not as great. The reason for this is because it's legal to abort or kill a baby if you feel it's more convenient to do so than it is to feed and clothe and rear the baby. Therefore, our consciences are clear because we can push the blame off on somebody else, such as the doctors, and the lawmakers. Uncle Nabob, or anybody else but ourselves. So, you see. if Hitler had initiated the practice of performing abortions on all the pregnant Jewish women, you could well imagine the catastrophic outcome. All he would have had to db would be to sit back and wait for the old Jews to die out. And that way. Hitler could have achieved his ultimate dream of annihilating the entire Jewish race. I agree that that is some pretty morbid and far-fetched reasoning on my part. But I believe it illustrates perfectly how serious and catastrophic the practice of abortions are to the human race as a whole. We are all too close to the problem to see the seriousness of the whole mess. But. what can we do? You might ask. Well, it's really quite simple. When election day arrives, be sure to find out the candidate's stand on abortions. If he supports abortions, you support his opponent. Let's do it for our young whom they are killing. It might also do us good to keep this point in mind: Many times, especially around election time, many candidates seemingly will tell you anything. Why, it seems as if honey pure melts in the candidate's mouth. Take a closer look. More times than not that's not honey you see seeping out the corners of his mouth. Like a dog perched under an eating table begging for table scraps, the candidate could very well be drooling at the mouth he's lusting after your vote so bad. So, take advantage of the situation. Let the candidate know where you stand on an issue. That way. we voters can turn things around. Far too many politicians seem to resent the voters' views and concerns. We need to weed them out and replace them with folk who will represent (not resent) our views and concerns. Bear with me folk. We'll probably lighten up next week. I'll talk at 'ya some more then. PREVENT ACCIDENTAL POISONING The Lumbee Medical Center is pleased to be a participant in a Poison Control Project to be launched by the Robeson County Health De partment in early April. The project goal is to supply a one ounce bottle of syrup of Ipecac to all the county households with preschool children. The Lumbee Medical Center will serve as a distribution site for Pembroke and contiguous areas. Syrup of ipecac is an agent which induces emesis (vomit ing) when used appropriately. The ingestion of toxic sub stances. particularly by chil dren. is a significant problem in terms of incidence rate and morbidity/ mortality. In many cases the prompt induction of vomiting following poison in gestion will greatly reduce the potential health hazards which can be associated with such ingestions. Educational material and detailed instructions for pro per usage of syrup of Ipecac will accompany each bottle of i Ipecac. The Lumbee Medical Cen ter will be happy to assist with any questions or problems regarding either poison con trol in general or with "Pro ject Ipecac" in particular. * Pharmacist Pembroke Drug Center Trust essential to good service Why trust any particular pharmacy?
