CHAVIS GETS NEW ELECTIONS
IN COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD RACE
< ? __ 2
Raleigh-"I' m not surprised," said Eliza
beth Morton, Robeson County elections
supervisor, after hearing of the state
election board's decision to call for a new
election in the hotly-contested District
Six Robeson County Board of Education
race Monday.
Incumbent Pete Gark initially was
declared the winner in the district
encompassing Back Swamp, Gaddys.
Thompson and parts of Lumberton
Precincts 4, 5,6 and 7 on May 4 by a 40
vote margin- 567-527- over newcomer
Larry Chavis, Sr. Both combatants are
Indians.
A date for the new election will be set
"as soon as practical." said a state
election board spokesman.
Results of the May 8 primary had been
in doubt since election officials found
that the number of balloU cast was
several times the number of eligible
voters.
Chavis challenged the results after
election officials confirmed that 166
ballots were cast when only 25 people
were eligible to vote.
The precinct is divided among people
eligible to vote in both the city and
county school board races. Officials said
they believe ineligible voters were
mistakenly handed the county ballots.
Two other Robeson County primary
races have been challenged. J.W. Hunt,
an incumbent county commissioner who
was defeated by challenger Henry
Douglass in a June 5 runoff Friday filed a
petition alleging voting irregularities.
The county Board of elections scheduled
a hearing on Hunt's petition for July 9 at
7 p.m.
The board recommended denying
another election in the county's District 5
school board race. William McCallum,
who apparently lost by 49 votes to
Catherine Leach in that contest, wants a
new election because he says the
elections office failed to send ballots to
eligible voters in Maxton. The affected
area represents only a possible 36 votes,
fewer than the margin of the winner,
according to elections officials.
State Elections Director Alex Brock
said the board's decision for a new
District 6 primary was based on findings
submitted by the Robeson County Board
of Elections about the number of people
not eligible to vote that were permitted to
vote and others who were eligible but
who were not permitted to vote.
"There apparently was overall confu
sion relative to the people who voted."
he said. "The board felt that the only
appropriate remedy was a new primary.'
When told of the board's decision,
Clark said, "I don't feel like it's
necessary. I don't feel they had enough
to go on."
Chavis was unavailable for comment.
The state board has not yet heard the
District 5 challenge.
