Football is one of the roughest, toughest sports and it attracts thousands of youngsters each fall. Unfortunately, the thrills it gen erates for spectators are often ac companied by injuries to the par ticipants. "Frankly, I'm as big a football fan as the next fellow," says Dr. Harvey C. Schultz, Jr., D.C., of the Schultz Chiropractic Center. But his interest in the game goes beyond competition when there is an in jury at a game, or the possibility that one has occurred. "An injury on the football field is very often the same type as that received in an auto crash," says Dr. Schultz. "The body is struck or badly jarred, and the bones in the neck or back can be misplaced, or sometimes fractured. "When this occurs in an arm or leg, the fractured bone is set and nature heals the break with time," Dr. Schultz continues. "But not so easily detected," he notes, "and far more threatening is a misplaced or damaged verte brae in the spinal column." Dr. Schulz reminds that if one or more of these bones is even slight- ' ly out of line, it^can mean pressure on the nerves inside the spine and actual partial or complete para i e DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC lysis of a vital organ such as the $ heart, the ears or any of the body's V muscles. ' ? "It can mean permanent spinal 0 curvature later," says Dr. Schultz, J "which shows up with startling I clearness in X-rays of many pat- y ients." 1 Dr. Schultz warns that while football is a fine builder of charac ter and body, no football injury jjj should be forgotten until after competent examination and con sultation. T "Too often symptoms such as headaches or digestive distur- cj bances come later and without r apparent cause," says Dr. Schultz, "as a result of an unattended neck or back injury. If the nerves are pinched and the pressure is not relieved, trouble is sure to come." ^ Football is part of an American y tradition in education, and it is I certainly here to stay. "But there is always a price for good things, I! and the price in football is occa- ^ sional injury of the players," says ? Dr. Schultz. y Every athlete should be taken to a modern Chiropractic facility such as the Schultz Chiropractic Center before the injury is forgotten and a youth is allowed to return to the game. There are many dan gers out on the streets at night, so exercise all due caution. Accompany small children and limit the wear ing of elaborate, clumsy costumes. Tell your kids to walk facing the traffic and have them carry flashlights. Have older kids, who go out by them selves, to stay in familiar neighborhoods and not to accept rides from strangers.
