Hasidic Saying mwm New high tech space-age design in racing bicycles, com bined with an advanced elite athletic training program, has resulted in a history | making jackpot of gold, sil ver and bronze medals for United States Cycling Team riders competing in the 23rd Olympiad in Los Angeles. Riding the so-called new "funny" bikes, American riders scored results not so funny to their international Olympic competitors. United States riders won a total of nine medals, includ ing four gold, three silver and two bronze during Olympic competition, marking a com plete turn-around and a true Cinderella story of achieve ment. Until now, U.S. bike racers have not won any Olym pic medals since 1912 when a lone bronze medal was earned. U.S. riders have the most advanced bicycles ever design - ed, thanks to a completely new state-of-the-art technol ogy developed at the U.S. Cyc ling Federation Bicycle Tech-, nical Development Center, which is operated by the Huffy Corporation and its Raleigh subsidiary. The ("en ter is the only one of its kind on the North American Con tinent. Of the total nine medals awarded to the U.S. cycling team, five were won by Raleigh riders, including two gold, two silver and one bronze. Connie Carpenter won a gold medal in the first Olym pic Women's Road Race on a Raleigh team bicycle. Her time was two hours, 11 min utes and 14 seconds. Steve Hegg won the gold in Individual Pursuit compe tition on a Raleigh Technium bicycle with a unique rear disc wheel developed by Huffy Corporation at the Bi cycle Technical Development Center. Hegg established a new outdoor world's record for the 4,000-meter individual pursuit class with his qual ifying time of 4:35.37. Nelson Vails eurned a sil ver medal in Sprint competi tion on a Raleigh team bicycle. Hegg, along with riders Harvey Nitz, Brent Emery and Pat McDonough, earned silver medals in Team Pur suit competition. Again, the winners were riding state-of the-art Raleigh Technium racing machines equipped with the special disc rear wheels. Riders Rov Knickman. David Ph i n n ey, Andy Weaver and Ron Keifel won bronze medals in the Team Time Trial event on Raleigh Technium bicycles. The bicycle ridden by Nitz, who won a bronze medal .in Individual Pursuit racing, in corporated Huffy Corpora tion Tech Center wheels. United States champion cyclists point out that the Kevlar and graphite disc wheels developed at the Technical .Center definitely helped give a competitive edge to American riders. The Tech Center Staff is now embarking on a pro gram which will provide a whole new dimension of ad vanced design development There will be further weight reductions and specifically for disc wheels on the racing machines which will be used in World ('humpionship events in the U.S. in 1986. Here's some encouraging news for women distressed with urinary incontinence (uncontrollable discharge of urine from lack of bladder control). Urologists report that incontinence is definite ly treatable in virtually all cases. There are two categories of urinary incontinence in adult women. The first is called "stress incontinence" and it can be cured surgically. Ev ery urologist is trained in the procedure. Stress inconti nence is the cause when a woman loses urine with coughing, sneezing, lifting heavy objects. Except in the most severe cases, these women are dry in bed at night, and lose urine only in the standing position. Because an exact diagno sis is important, it is useful to test yourself to see if you have this kind of inconti nence. You can drink water until your bladder feels com fortably full, stand undressed with your legs apart, and INCONTINENCE All types of urinary in continence can be suc cessfully treated. cough hard. If urine leaks from the bladder onto the floor immediately following the cough (within 1-3 se conds) you probably have the type of surgically curable in continence, often called "stress incontinence." Stress incontinence is caused by a downward displacement, in to the pelvis, of the junction between the bladder and ure thra. It is surgically cured by elevating this junction to its normal position in the pelvis. The second category, "ur gency incontinence," is usu ally treated successfully with medications to reduce the overactivity of the bladder muscle. The main point that urolo gists make is that though uri nary leakage has diverse causes, it can be successfully treated. I*5 I^O?,5T J If you have this prob lem it's best to see a urologist.
