N.C. 28372 by Bruce Barton LUMBEE ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP IDEA DEVELOPING.... Last week I broached the idea of a Lumbee Endowment Scholarship at PSU. It is an idea whose time has come, and the idea is developing slowly...but surely. I believe out goal of $50,000 can be reached by 1987 whenKU celebrates its 100th birthday. I estimate that there are 50.000 Lumbees in North Carolina and elsewhere. If each of us gave $1.00 our goal could be reached easily, and painlessly. Think about it: a $50,000 endowment scholar ship set up to generate scholarships for Lumbee Indi an students, and also to enhance the American Indian Studies Department there. This is the best way I know to assure Lumbee participation in the centennial celebration of the birth place of the Lumbee Nation. Non- Indian participation is welcomed too. There are a number of ways to contribute. You can donate a dollar in your own name, in the name of a child, or loved one, or in the name of any number of Lumbee heroes who played such a vital part in the development of PSU. So far. I have received a lot of support for my idea. 1 hope you will join me. A number of people walked up to me this week and gave me a dollar. For instance, Warren Love, who married a local girl and is a member of our community, said, “That is one of the best ideas 1 have heard of lately.” Love is director of the media center at PSU. Terry- Hutchins, legal assistant to the chancellor at PSU. said, “I want to be part of this too...” The second person to contribute was Gene Warren, director of public information at PSU. Gene said simply, “Here’s my dollar. 1 hope you can bring it off.” So Join me, and let’s do it. Here’s the scoreboard so far: Bruce Barton $1. Gene Warren $I Warren Love $1 Terry Hutchins $1 Anonymous $1 (III loving memory of the late Harker Randolph Barton) Brandi Nakell Barton $1 (by her parents. Bruce & Barbara Barton) Total $6 goal $50,000 Received to date $6 fair and square, and demo cratically. He received the job on 4-3 vote. Voting for him were Wyvis Oxendine, Jack Morgan. Henry Douglas and Sammy Cox. Voting against him were H.T. Taylor, Carl Britt and Bill Berndon. I spoke in favor of Carter. He is a fine Christian gentleman and will do just fine as emergency services coordi nator. Carl Pulley, chairman of the county firemen’s association, presented a letter from his group and signed by a number of volunteer fire chiefs. They contended that Carter was not qualified. That’s their opinion. I believe Carter will prove them wrong. Racism is still alive and flourishing in Robeson Coun ty. The tri-racial winds blow ing in Robeson County make for interesting, sociological storms sometimes. But, like all the rest of the storms in the past, this one will blow over. Every time an Indian is hired (and Blacks too) he comes under the scrutiny of those who wish to inject racism into every facet of our lives. It’s too bad, but racism is a fact of life in Robeson County. All Carter can do is do his job. Everything else will take care of Itself, and it will make the task of the next Indian or Black hired easier, Thinking Prayerfully of Our Friend John L. Godwin It is with a heavy heart that I report this w'eek that Mrs. Gertrude Godwin passed away on Tuesday evening. Words are inadequate to express condolences to her husband, John L. Godwin, and the rest of the family. We are thinking prayerfully about him during his time of be reavement. Trusting always in our God who knows what is best for His own. God will sustain us in times of trouble. And so, Mr. Godwin, friend, we share this with you because we love you. BEYOND LIFE’S GATEWAY There's an open gate At the end of the road Through which each must go alone. And there in a light we cannot see Our Father claims His own; Beyond the gate, your loved one Finds happiness and rest And there is comfort In the thought That a loving God knows best. He has social free dom, moral freedom, and intellectual freedom. He is born to become free, to develop self-realization coop eratively, but his sense of duty goes into a tail spin when he sees the big crowds at the games and then as does labor, says, “they are making mil- lionsoff back.” Proposition 48 makes him even more of a slave. How would I suggest the NCAA handle all of this? The answer is simple. Get out of the enforcement duty and leave it up to the administrat ions of the five hundred universities and colleges to do their own enforcement since you the NCAA, was originally set-up to form rules for all the sports and to run tourna ments. It is impossible to take over the responsibilities of each of the individual institut ions to maintain their own standards & keep law and order. 1 hesd" sports are still games. Sure each player, coach and alumnus wants to win but no one should pay the price of not accepting any appreciation some one wants to freely give them. Millions have been given in the past and it never can be stopped as each person is an end in himself and not a means to an end.
