PSITs Steve Johnson is New Lender for Basketball Squad in 86
Steve Johnson, a 6 foot-8, 195-pound junior from
Wilmington, has started to become a force to be controlled on
the basketball court for the Braves of PSU.
Through the Braves' first 13 games, Johnson has emerged
as the team's fourth leading scorer (11.3) and second leading
rebounder (7.1). In addition, the Wilmington native has made
52 percent of his shots from the field (55-106) and 73 pertent
from the line (37-51).
Pembroke State Coach Dan Kenney feels Steve has become
one of the better forwards in the tough Carolines Conference.
"I think that Steve has just done an outstanding job for us.
Right now he might be the best high post player in the
Carolinas Conference," commented Coach Kenney. "When he
catches the ball at the foul line he is very versatile, he is a good
? hooter and can shoot that shot and he is an exceptional passer
fur a big man and he really makes our offense go with his
assists. His rebounding has really come on recently."
Coach Kenney added, "Steve is a very, very firey
competitor and he plays very hard on the court. Steve Johnson
has been a very important part of the early success we've hadf
so far. 1 just see him to get better and better during his
career."
Majoring in accounting at PSU, Johnson hopes to go into
business with his dad (RH. Johnson) adding an academic
prospective u> TmIcwai< > ; >rvwall Construction of Wilmington.

directly related to my confidence. I feel like I am shooting the
ball well but need to continue to work on my foot quickness."
Johnson scored his career high last Saturday night when he
tallied 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He has led the
Braves in scoring once and has been the team's leading
rebounder in five of the first 13 games.
No matter how the. Braves end up in 1986, Steve Johnson
will be looked to by the opponents with a "new" respect The
1983 graduate of Cape Fear Academy says he is looking a
forward to the remainder of this season and his senior year. I
"I just see good things happening to Steve individually ! I
along with the team in the future with his continued improved ; I
play," Coach Kenney concluded.
