psu's baseball program was
outlined to the members at
the weekly, Tuesday night
meeting held at the Town &

Chairman Vernon Oxendine
presented Dr. Dan Davis, the
new PSU baseball coach.
CoachDavis comes from Ten
nessee. He formerly coached
baseball at Campbellville
College in Kentucky. He has
his doctorate in physical edu
catoin, his basic philosophy
puts the education of the
student-athlete first and base
ball second, however, they
will work hard at their sport
doing weight training in
the off season. Their class
schedules will include many
early morning classes thus
insuring they will not miss
class at home games. They
will play during their Spring

missing classes to a mini
mum. Much attention is being
given to the condition of the
playing field with the players
doing much of the work, thus
creating a pride in their field
and pride in their play and
team work. Dr. Davis with,
help of Dr. Pennington have

Hardly a business or occu
pation exists today that is not
necessary that the owners or
employees undertake contin
ual training and updating.
The highly specialized occu
pations provide for seminar
and training sessions that are
usually quite expensive and
often rather lengthy. Even the
less specialized occupations
provide similar services, but
hese too are often expensive
. nd inconvenient to attend.
Those businesses that par
ticipate in these training
opportunities are often the
ones that are most successful,
since these people are more
able to keep up with new
technology & share ideas and
successes with their peers.
In the past, those involved
in the agricultural professions
especially producers, have
had rather limited opportuni
ties to keep up the changes in
new technology. In fact, not
until recent years has it
become necessay that the
producers gain much more
information than that gained
from experience and atten
ding occasional meetings by
retail distributors and public
service agencies.
But the situation has chan
ged drastically in recent
years. Because of the great
diversity of many producers
and the fact that the profit
margins in agricultural pro
duction are so smal]. it fc
necessary that the producers
have at least a working
knowledge of many different
topics. They must be aware ot
the most current tax laws, the
details about business liabili
ties, the full scope of govern
mental programs, inter
national happenings that
affect prices and demand, the
latest technology that can be
used under intensive man
agement, and much more.
For those prodcuers, young
and old alike, that plan to
remain in the fanning busi
ness, it is going to be
increasingly important that
they become more knowled
geable of more than just
production practices.
Unfortunately, even today
there are very few opportuni
ties for producers to gain the
information they need unless
they can devote considerable
time to advanced educations
with agricultural emphasis or
seek out and participate in
numerous seminars and work
shops.
The best opportunity for a
producer to gain a vast
amount of information in a
rather short period is the
Modern Farming Short Cour
se sponsored each year by the
.North Carolina Bankers As so
ciation an the North Caro
lina Agricultural Extension
Service. This school will be
conducted this year on the
campus of North Carolina
State University from January
26 through February 6, 1987
a time of the year that a
producer can best be away
from the farm for a few days.
It is not an attempt to provide
in-depth training on any one
subject but rather an
attempt to provide a working
r"mae fa itixt iT\
knowledge of many topics so
they can best be utilized in the'
management of the farm
opertion.
The number of students for
this school is rather limited so
that individual instruction,
class interaction, and ques
tion and answer periods can
provide the most information
in this short period. Only two
students will be admitted
from each county, and the
Bankers Association will pro
vide scholarships for those
students which wilt pay for
virtually all costs of the
school, including tuition,
rooms and meals.
If you are interested in
attending, or know of some
one that could benefit from
this school, please make
arrangements to complete an
application right away. Final
selection for these scholar
ships will be made December
10, 1986. lb apply, please
contact me at the Extension
Service by calling 738- 8111 or
