Although this is 1987, if one listens hard enough, one can still hear the sound of the drum in Robeson County. This drum is being kept alive by a people that want to bring back their culture, tradition, history and language. These people are the Tuscarora Tribe of North Carolina and they are represented at Pow Wows and other functions by this drum. This drum group decided that they wanted a traditional historical Tuscarora name foi the group. They researched and decided on the name Kau-ta-noh. In the Tuscarora langauge, Kau-ta-noh means • ‘‘People of the submerged pine trees.” This is what the fiiat band of 'Itiscaroras that came to North Carolina from the Great Lakes area called themselves. The reason for this name was that the area where they settled in North Carolina was on die Neuse River and when the river would flood the islands in the river would become submer ged as would the pine trees on them. So this name has a historical and traditioiu meaning for the group and f the Tuscarora Tribe. The official name of drum group is the Tuscanc Kau-ta-noh Society Sing« Three of the drummers hsi been singing together for 1 years. They are Timotli, Jacobs, Golden Locklettf'ant Mike Dunn. These Ihrei started singing for the Tusca roars at Drowning Creek a of Maxtin in 1982. They hav stayed together and they noi form the nucleus of thi present group, which noi consists of five singers. Dies signers are Timothy Jacob lead sing, Golden Lockleai Mike Dnn, Vernon Blackhois and 13-year-old John Oxer dine. The group has future plat of establishing an Iroquoi- Tuscarora Social Dance GnM that will feature the traditiK ' al songs and dances of Iti Iroquois of which the Dsa roras belong. For those who would likei contact the group, they « call the 'Tuscarora 'Tribe f North Carolina at 739- 111* and ask for Timothy Jacobst Mike dunn at 521-3725.
