f ' They Are Helping Out Everywhere In The County' MACLEAN SALUTES THE PEOPLE OF PSU BY GENE WARREN In his remarks last FYiday night at Pembroke State University's Centennial Founder's Day Banquet, Hector , Maclean spoke in glowing terms of how much FVmbroke State University means to Robeson County. His words were in praise of the people of PSU and the many services they render to the county. Maclean, chairman of the board and chief executive of Southern National Corporation, is co-chairman of PSITs $1 million centennial fund-raising campaign-and also chairman of Robeson County's Bicentennial Celebration Commission. His words were as follows: "Surely, 1987 is a wonderful and glorious year for Robeson County. We are celebrating the bicentennial, the birthday of our beloved 'State of Robeson.' "We are also celebrating the centennial, the 100th birthday of our beloved IVmbroke State University. "It has really done so much to improve the quality of life in this county our own university. I know it has students from all over, but it is ours--and it is here. "It's not the $12.8 million it turns out every year in money paying for goods and services. It's not the payroll of over $700,000 a month. It's not all those facilities--not the cultural things not the social events. They are all there, and they are all good and do improve our quality of life. "It's really the PEOPLE who do so much for us. "They are certainly visible in this county. "When you go' to church on Sunday morning, it's a good bet if someone gets up to sing, it's 50 percent sure they're from Pembroke State University or they teach there or work there. They are in our government, in our schools, they are everywhere serving on boards and helping out "I don't know what we'd do without them--I don't think we'd make it. We're proud of each and everyone connected with Pembroke State University." The Robeson County Board of Commissioners gave Sheriff Hubert Stone permission to hire two of his sons in the Robeson County Sheriffs Department. That is wntng. Kevin Stone, son of Hubert Stone; Iflled Jimmy Earl Cummings on November 1,1986 without reason. Hubert Stone sees no wrong (official) in the death of a citizen as the result of the practice of nepotism. I disagree. As 1 see it. Sheriff Hubert Stone attempted to label Rev. Mike Cummings and Rev. Bob Mangum as less than men of God and true friends of mankind. He is wrong. If (here is any area more infested with drugs than another area in Robeson County and ihe Sheriff is aware of the condition and does not act to clean it up. the practice of nepotism stands out even more as a deadly wrong. There are thousands of saints and sinners who are upset with the statement made by Sheriff Hubert Stone in reference to Rev. Mike Cummings and Rev. Bob Mangum. My father Rev. R.D. Locklear-known as a community leader in Ihe Mt. Airy area for many years-always said that what was done under the cover of darkness would come to the light and be made known. My father was right. I also disagree with the adverse comments about Mt. Airy as Hubert Stone stated: being one of the worst areas in the county with drugs. Bonk Maynor is from the Raft Swamp Community. James Fuller Locklear is front the Union Chapel area. Johnathan Lowery is from the Pembroke area. That is simply a mis-statement of facts. None of these is from ML Airy. Sheriff Stone's comments were cruel and unfeeling. I am sorry he made them. It is a sad commentary on him as a public official. Maybe Robeson County will wake up one day and stop electing people like Hubert Stone to positions of public trust We can do better, I only wish we would. Can you take back harsh or hateful words? Definitely not! People at Mt. Airy are upset. Hubert Stone has offended our community, and our fine pastor-Rev. Mike Cummings. Speaking as a whole, Hubert Stone should resign. If he does not do so then we ought to vote him out of office at the first opportunity. VIOJET LOCKLEAR MT. AIRY COMMUNITY A school of fish is also known as a shoal or draught. Jimmy only symbolize* the many who have died with questionable knowledge of the saving grace Christ imparts. As I stood in the pulpit in the house of almighty God, I paused to wonder at the Jimmy Earl Cummings who had lived in this community. My gaze fell upon his wife, his young childnn, family and friends left to mourn him. I thought how much diftprent this situation could have been if this young man had confessed Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Had I missed an opportunity to tell him about God? How many others lie cold in the grave that Christians have failed to witness to. The horror of these followed me away from that funeral. Ute horror grew as I looked around Robeson County full of injustice, prejudice, and cruelty. What must Christ think of all this when we the Christians possess the power to change this corruption? Many of you are asking how can I change the evil that permeates my home and community? Instead of asking this question, ask how Abraham, Job, Hosea, Christ, St John, etc. dealt with the evil of their day? When you answer this last question you will answer the problems of Robeson County. The formula is easy and does not require that an individual be able to read or write. Hie first part of the formula is prayer. Easy yet difficult Ray for Christ to be number one in your life. When others look at you prey that God will get self out of the way so others will see Christ in you. Hie second step in prayer is to pray for those who seek to destioy and abuse others. Irregardless of the evO, prey for those who commit it, they are souls in danger of hell fire. Next, pray for the families of this land for they are the foundation of any nation. Without a solid family structure a nation is easily destroyed by its enemies. Hosea observed this destruction and knew that it would destroy even the strongest of nations. Last but not the least, pray for those entrusted with the governing of our nation and county. Pray for them when you vote for them and pray for those elected so that God will govern through them. When man is left to govern himself and others without God, Satan rules. Hie next step in making change is to reach out to others. Begin each day with a smile and a kind work for others. Love is the strongest weapon against evil that man possesses. It is love that sustains our soldiers in battle and helps premature, sick infants to fight and live. Love nailed Christ to the cross ; and created a nation as great as America. It has been love that through the years has spurred men and women to seek, j freedom. It is the same freedom you search for freedom from prejudice, injustice and oppression. So my brothers and sisters, allow this love to cause you to take on its armor to fight the evil among us. We are one in Christ and for this cause we must love each with brotherly love and pray for each other irregardless of our Station in life. With prayer in our hearts and love for our fellow man we can approach the Jimmy Earl's in our community and prevent the loss of an opportunity to witness for Christ Proclaim loud my brothers and sisters that Christ lives and. He is waiting to help. j< JAMES D. DIAL PEMBROKE NC L, ,"... Sheriffs Friends Appalled ? By His Actions Tb the Editor, I consider Sheriff Hubert Stone a personal friend, and my relationship with him in the past has been a positive one.' But according to management and behavioral theory, conflict is - inevitable, and so it is in the matter which has prompted my . writing of this letter. On March 2nd, Reverend Robert Man gum and Rev. Michael Cummings both highly respected ministers and outstanding community leaders, approached the Robeson., County Board of Commissioners as citizens and taxpayers to address their concerns relative to county policies resulting in nepotism in employment and to recommend that they establish an advisory committee to provide input into the policy review. As I read the account of this meeting in The. Robetcnian, I read nothing that indicated that either of these ? individuals made any indictments, stated any specific claims, or did anything more than ash the Robeson County Board of Commissioners to consider their recommendation to examine a current policy. I am appalled that my friend. Sheriff Hubert Stone saw fit to -* conduct himself in a manner so unbecoming and unprofessio nal to the office to which he was elected by the citizens of * Robeson County. In particular, according to the newspaper I - Sheriff Stone displayed a defensive posture and stooped to character and family affairs of two citizens who were ** exercising their rights to approach the Robeson County Board \ of Commissioners, particularly when the incidents mentioned were not direct actions of the two individuals so personally ?" assaulted. It can only be construed that Sheriff Stone had to ?; dig down into the trenches to attack Rev. Man gum and Rev. Cummings through their family because he had absolutely nothing else to pull from the bottom of the barrel. To rise to I such a callous and inhuman act as did Sheriff Stone on this > occasion is more an indictment on his character than on the 1 character of either Rev. Man gum or Rev. Cummings. EARLH.
