READERS' FORUM CONTINUED FROM PACE 2 immune to HE wrath for wrongdoing. Bmuh the color of the slrfa M different, doeea't new the person is loved any more or wy leas than anyone else by their Creator. Who gave the White nee the right to decide that they were better than anyone else? We all need to realise that the Native Americana are indeed the only true Americans--all the rest of us are immigrants. If wy race in this country deserved recognition and help, it is the American kdian. It's time to help them rebuild instead of constantly tearing them down over wd over again. I*m tired of seeing these people being treated like some kind of loathe so me witnal instead of the human beings that they are!! Do you people realise that the United States of America is the only country in the world that has a nation of people living on reservations? The whites were so greedy for the prime lands that belonged to these people that the government decided to make a "peace treaty" with them do them a favor wd stop the wars. In order to do so, the Indian had to move from their homeland wd give up their hunting Iwds wd move to a government appointed "reservation," which 99% of the time turned out to be a wasteland unfit for wything, especially human habitat. That wasn't enough. If Indian children spoke their own language, they were beaten. Medicine people were killed off. so that the rituals and ceremonies would be eventually forgotten and done away with. Any other race that has made this country home has beea able to keep with their customs and their language- after all, if you ask me, it has turned into a country of redneck cowards who are so self-righteous and narrow minded, and our people are improverished and nearly Beaten. But thev will persevere. There are more people, whites and others, that are on their side. God brought the Hebrews out of Egypt and He will take care of these people also. One day the races will have to walk the same road and it is past time to make ammends. What we need to do- all races included is to try to start over by realizing that our present generation cannot help, or undo, the mistakes of our past generation, but we can try to make things right by giving each other a chance, start to trust each other, and realize that we are all the Creator's children. One race is not any better than the other and we should honor and respect the ways of our people, whether they be red, black, white, yellow or whatever! Put down the hate and guns. Smoke the pipe and shake hands. Let's make one more peace treaty and this time, keep it. God, the Great Spirit, or Whomever He may be called by any of His children, loves us ail-why can't we love and care for each other. He must he sorely ashamed of His children-look at what we are doing to each other. Sincerely, SANDRA NIVENS Matthew*. NC R eader Addresses Concerns On Correctional System To the Editor Today I write to you regarding a veiy abashed correctional system called. North Carolina Department of Corrections. More specifically, the Department of Prisons. And Td like to allude to the Sanford Advancement Center. I speak to their shame. It is serenely time that someone stand up and take notice of the acerbic structure of justice surrounding NCDOC. The conduct of the arbiter at Sanford Advancement Center is aberrant, at best It appears that their will to do just and right has abated. Once Upon fc time, the Sanford Advancement ?Center *ah'ti" part of NCDOC and abided by the guidelines set forth for operating an Advancement Center. Presently, the arbiter of SAC does not seem to equate the meaning of an Advancement Center. Instead of helping residents to smoothly re-enter society with a graceful attitude, SAC is arrogant, disrespectful, and lascivious and therefore SAC is developing men of the same character. The men at SAC have great talents and would be a great asset to themselves and others, if given an ample chance and proper guidance. The men that reside at SAC cannot have friends visit with them and very few relatives. This is cruel and unusual punishment, over and beyond that called for in the policy set forth by NCDOC. This is absurd! Here at SACa very distinct form of regression is practiced rather than progression. And the arbiter has conspired, together with his staff to digress NCDOC policy to affect a very unworkable scheme to the detriment of all residents involved. That is ascerbk, to say the least! I speak to their shame! Let me not fail to mention, there are some great educational opportunities for a select few. And, there are a few who are paying the cost of living by working on work release. But, these are, in most cases, not all, short timers. Those who need it the most, and whose families are suffering as a result of their abscence, are the most likely to be discriminated against, I, too, am a victim of the latter. ? Employers that choose to help the residents by offering employment are fended off with derisions of reasoning. This handcuffs the public employer that would be of service to the residents, NCDOC, and the community, if given an equitable chance. The residents here at SAC are great men that need more caring attitudes like that of Professor Ray Backlund. The residents are forced to take his classes ( Human Relations and Blueprint Reading ), only to learn to love it, because of the caring attitude of the professor. Professor Backlund is a member of the immediate community at large. This is what men should be exposed to, rather than the harsh inhumane consideration given by SAC. This is not to say that wrong-doings should go unpunished, but, it is to say, that, if rehabilitation is going to be had at SAC, then, NCDOC policy is going to have to play a vital part at SAC and allow for the kind of advancement that was implied with the originators of the advancement idea. The residents are willing to do their part in enhancing the re development of an advancement center here and turn the tide of this being a harassment center. But, we cannot do it alone, we need the support of the local community, to include, but not limited to, employers and civic organizations, and, alto, the encouragement of SAC staff. God is not pleased with this world today. He's going to move this wicked race, raise Him up a nation that will do His will, and He will be pleased with the way that they live. This still applies: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
