Wett Kobe ton Teachers Awarded Enrichment ShuHet
Three West Robeson Senior High School teachers have been
selected to participate in summer enrichment programs due to
their outstanding contributions and continued dedication to
improved classroom performance. They are John McNeill.
Dolores Jones and Ted Gaskins.
For the past five years John McNeill has served as
chairperson of the English Department at West Robeson.
During this time he has been nominated and selected to
participate in two study seminars sponsored by the National
Endowment for the Humanities located in Washington. D.C.
"This summer I will participate in a five week study
seminary at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut under the '
direction of a distinguished teacher and scholar, James A.
Miller. I will join fifteen other teachers from across the nation ,
to study four Classic Afro-American novels: Their Eyes Were
Watching God, Native Son, fn visible Man, and Song of
Solomon," said McNeill.
In 1985, he participated in a four week study of the Linking
Region, Gendre, and Genre in the Stories of Chopin. Welty,
O'Connor, and Walker on the campus of the University of
Mississippi.
The National Endowment for the Humanities sponsors S3
seminars annually across the U.S. Each seminar is open to 15
eligible teachers who receive a stipend to cover travel,
housing, books, and reseach expenses.
Dolores Jones has been accepted as a participant in a Level
II Spanish Workshop sponsored at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this 16-day workshop, she will
be involved in an integrated program which combines
residential language immersion, formal instruction in
conversation, grammar and literature, as well as a variety of
culturally enriching activities.
"All Level II Spanish Workshop participants are teachers
who attended one of the previous Level I Spanish Workshops
sponsored by the University or who have analagous
competence in Spanish," said Jones.
Ms. Jones participated in the 1985 summer workshop which
earned her graduate credit for her participation. In addition,
she will earn five graduate credit hours and a stipend to cover
tuition, campus housing and miscellaneous expenses.
Ms. Jones is the Chairperson of the Foreign Language
Department, sponsor of the West Robeson Spanish Club
which has over 150 members, and the former 1986-87 Robeson
County Teacher of the Year.
Ted Gaskins is the head coach for the boys' varsity
basketball team at West Robeson and has been selected the
1987 88 Robeson County Coach of the Year by the local news
media.
Gaskins was honored with this title due to his confidence
and teach endurance throughout the season.
"We placed second in the Robeson County Shoot-Out, in
the Southeastern 4 A Conference, and in the Conference
Tournament Championship Games.
"We closed the season with a 16-1 record," said Gaskins.
In addition, he has been selected to represent Region 4 as
an Assistant Coach in the 1988 State Amateur Sports Games
June 16-19 in Raleigh, NC.
Student athletes in grades nine through 12 from each of the
eight educational regions across the state will compete in over
26 sports events as patterned after the U.S. Olympic Festival.
"This is an honor to be selected from a pool of nearly 200
candidates. However, I am more elated about the honora
awarded to two of my senior varsity basketball players, Donald
Galbreath and Jeremy Sampson.
"Donald has been selected to attend West Point Military
Academy and Jeremy has been awarded a full basketball
scholarship to attend Pembroke State University," said
Gaskins.
Gaskins began his coaching career in Richmond County as
an assistant basketball coach ten years ago.
He credits his coaching skills for the sport with a basketball
romance that began in his early teenage years which awarded
him outstanding recognition in high school, college and in the
U.S. Army.
