Bob Donham 01 RCC GRADUATES TOLD ACCOMPLISHMENTS SIGNIFY NEW BEGINNING, NOT AN END Janice Kennedy-Sloan, vice pre sident of adult and continuing education at the Department of Community Colleges in Raleigh, (old 125 graduating high school students Thursday that their accomplishments signify a new beginning, not an end during commencement exercises at Robeson Community College's A.D. Lewis Auditorium. "Only as one experience comes to an end un we begin another, said Ms. fo^iedy-Sloan to an over flowing wowd of more than 1,100 people on hand to see family and friends walk across the stage to receive their high school diploma. "No matter where you or I are in our own pilgrimage now, God can give us a new beginning. Simple, isn't it? And yet important because this message runs like a golden thread through the Old Testament and the New Testament, through history, through the life of the Church, and through your experience and mine," she said. "Beginning at the end. That's what life is all about." This year's adult high school class was the third largest in the school's history and earned the distinction of being the first class to graduate in the new 1,000-seat Lewis Auditorium RCC's technical and vocational stu dents will graduate in August. Since its inception in 1967, the adult high school program has graduated more than 2,000 adults. RCC's program has traditionally ranked among the top five programs in the 58-member community college system. Thomas Milsap of Parkton was among those who graduated Thurs day night. "It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life," said Milsap following commencement exercises. "I had always helped others, but had never tried to do anything for myself." It was 1947 when family obliga tions forced Milsap out of the classroom. Later, when raising his own family, he would make certain his own children, five boys and two girls, would complete high school. "Don't tell me it can't be done if you have the interest," he said. "You can be what you want to be." Graduates received their diplomas in a special presentation made by RCC President Fred Williams and Trustee Chairman A. D. Lewis, Jr. Special recognition was given to 63 persons who this year passed the GED exam and received a high school diploma equivalency certifi cate. Ms. Kenney-Sloan, the keynote speaker, challenged graduates to move forward in their dreams and goals. "life, for you and me, is an endless chain of experiences," she said. "This is not the end. This is just as far as we go for the moment.... "Set goals. Dream dreams. Make every ending a real beginning." Minnows have teeth in their throat. ? I ? BRISSON \ | POOLS ?
