Robeson Community College News BY CAROLYN STEPHENS Hie community college system was designed with a strong emphasis on counseling. With this in mind, Robeson Community College staffs professionally trained counselors who are available to discuss and help students explore any problem areas they may experience whether it be personal, interpersonal, or academic concerns. Students may choose coun seling on a one-to-one basis, or they may choose to participate in a group. Examples of student concerns that counselors have helped with include academics, relationship problems, alcohol/drug use, habit control, time management, test-taking, assertive ness training, communication train ing, conflict management, self-con cept development, and coping with grief. Testing services are also adminis tered through the Counseling Center at RCC. Testing services are avail able to anyone wishing to find out more about themselves, their abili ties and interests. Some specialized tests include interest inventories, personality, aptitude, diagnostic, achievement, and general ability tests. Placement testing is required for admission into curriculum programs. The primary purpose of placement testing is to match the academic readiness of the student with the academic requirements of the curri culum. Test results are used in conjunction with other pertinent information in determining whether students are academically ready to enter particular programs. For more information concerning counseling and testing at RCC, contact J.W. Beatty, Director of Counseling and Testing.
