REFLECTIONS BY ALTA NYF OXENDINE Gathering Together At Chestnut Street Church Here in Robeson County we have our problems (including the need for better understanding and comnunication). But some of us from time to time do meet and worship together across racial lines. This was the case on Sunday, March 5, at Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in Lumberton. In fact, this is the second time since becoming a widow that I have attended the Rockingham District Lay Rally at Chestnut Street Church. To make it possible to meet in a church instead of a high school or the Performing Arts Center (as we have done the past several years) two rallies were held in the Rockingham District. The first one, beginning at 3 p.m., included all the United Methodist churches in Robeson County, of all three racial backgrounds. The second, at 6 p.m. included all United Methodist churches in both Scotland and Richmond counties, and was held at First United Methodist Church in Rockingham. There are 37 churches in those two counties, and 42 churches in Robeson County. West Robeson United Methodist Church, less than a year old, is the newest church to be organized in the Rockingham District. It was well represented at the rally as were most of the other United Methodist churches in the Pembroke area. St. Pauls U.M.C., located at St. Pauls, received recognition #as the small church with the most members present. "First Methodist" Pembroke, in the medium category, was also recognized, with a few more members present than the number for Sandy Plains U.M.C. Prospect, in the large church category, had the most members present. Mrs. Lucy Locklear, of First U.M.C. was surprised to be honored as runner-up for Lay Person of the Year from Robeson County. Mrs. Sara Elizabeth McCormick Pate of Rowland, was chosen as the Robeson County Lay Person of the Year. Mr. Stanley Cunnings was also recognized as Lay Person from Sandy Plains. Ms. Willie Mae Deese was chosen as West Robeson's Lay Person of the Year. Frances McNeill was the Lay Person chosen by Trinity U.M.C., Red Springs. And there were others whom I did not know, including Mr. Charlie Wright, of Mt. Olive U.M.C. in Lumberton. Four of the five Outstanding Seniors in the Rockingham District are from Robeson County, They represent Chestnut Street U.M.C. and three of the Pembroke area United Methodist churches?Sandy Plains, Prospect, and First Methodist in Pembroke. Robeson County seniors honored are: Nick Locklear, First U.M.C., Pembroke; Necia Brayboy, Sandy Plains U.M.C.; David Dial, Prospect U.M.C.; and Denise Gentry, Chestnut Street U.M.C. As at past district rallies, one of the most inpressive aspects of the program was the lovely music presented by the multi-racial choir, made up of members of several different churches (including First U.M.C. and Prospect U.M.C.) and directed by Harold Jacobs, music director at Prospect U.M.C. CENSUS AWARENESS WORKSHOP CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 ? as a direct result of census data. Census data is important and provides information for a wide variety of tasks. The 1980 census under-counted the population by 2.2 million individuals so the U.S. Bureau of Census is making em all out effort to insure everyone is counted for in the 1990 census. Census forms will be mailed in March 1990 with April 1, 1990 being the 21st national "Census Day" in American History, Cooperation and assistance from all groups within a community is a must. It is in everyone's self-interest to insure all are counted and Telamon Corporation ? plans to take an active role in supporting and assisting in the 1990 census effort. Telamon Corporation is a private, non-profit corporation. It is funded in eight states, through the Job Training Partnership Act, to provide training and enployment services. The Lumberton office, located at 204 N. Chestnut Street, serves Robeson County and portions of Scotland and Hoke counties. For more information on the 1990 census or if you would like Mr. Brown to address your group, please call (919)859-6052 or contact your local Telamon office. 1 THE COACH'S CORNER 1 t The NCAA Tournament Indiana, my alma mater, won the Big Ten in spite of a poor start-having lost to North Carolina, Syracuse and Louisville. They are disappointed in that they have to play in the West Regional instead of in Indianapolis, where Illinois is seeded first. However, Arizona is in the top half of their draw and this may make Indiana mad enough to beat them in a semi-final game and face Missouri in the finals of the West Regionals. Anyway, this is the way I am picking the West Regional, with Indiana the winner and Arizona I I second. ( Illinois should win in ! the Midwest but both , J Louisville and Arkansas are i in the upper bracket with I Illinois. Georgia Tech is 1 ] in the bottom half of the draw and they have a good chance against Missouri and Syracuse. But Illinois 1 should win the Midwest. In the east it's Georgetown to win but North . Carolina State is carrying ' a real sting from Maryland in the ACC Championship. They may be mad enough to win the East. However, they would have to get by Georgetown in the semi-finals. West Virginia, Tennesse and Duke are in the East and Duke could knock them all off since they could be mad from losing the ACC in a close one with UNC. The Southeast is tough, with both UNC and Oklahoma, who is seeded first in this bracket. Michigan is tough and could possibly win it. Michigan has had some close losses in the Big Ten and could win it. However, I hope UNC has finally put it together and can beat off No. 1 seed Oklahoma. I'll pick UNC with a prayer.
