And just makes me feel better. Indeed, I don't care what that popu lar tv commercial says, I spell relief "M-A-M-A." Folk, I guess the doctor just failed to make a clean slice when he cut the umbellica cord when I was born. She and I have a special bond. That's all there is to it. In fact, I probably hollered for mama when the doctor spanked my bottom when I was born. So, if I can be macho in your eyes and still be a mama's boy, then well and good. If not, I hate it. Because this two hundred and Fifty pound, thirty-eight year old man loves his mama desperately. Indeed, it feels good to be man enough to say, "Mama, I love you." Try it some time. You'll like it. And mama probably will too. We'll talk again folk. READERS' FORUM Continued Frqm Page 2 Simply stated: "When we do not Lee A. Maynor use what we have in a responsi- Route 1 ble and prudent manner." Pembroke Waiting for answers from Judge Brooks To the Editor I write to you in response to the recent ruling by Judge Farmer that over rode a former ruling by Judge Dexter Brooks. Farmer would not allow Eddie Hatcher to have the attorneys of his choice. He made that Vuling after Superior Court Judge Dexter Brooks had ruled that Hatch er's attorneys, William Kuntsler and Ron Kuby could represent him in Robeson County court I am surprised that we have not heard any comment from Judge Brooks. IVior to becoming Judge, Brooks served as my attorney... I was well satisfied with his performance as an attorney and expect nothing less from him as a judge. My public question to him is this: Are all superior court judges of equal authority? Did Judge Farmer have a legal right to over ride your previous decision? Something is wrong with this situation...and I don't understand what is going on. I call on you. Judge Brooks, to let it be known what can be done about this situation. Violet Locklear Route 1 Pembroke, NC ^ Living Off The Land V Continued From Page 5 the Indians, it was used as a color ing agent in clothing, war paint and also medicinally to fight infec tions. Today, its big claim to fame is as a dental plaque fighter and it is listed as one of the ingredients in Viadcnt toothpaste. Problems arise using scientific names, too. Our wild relative of the mustard ? watercress, is known scientifically as Nastur tium officinale and is related to cabbages and horse radish. It is used in herbal medicine to prom ote sweating which is a healing process. However, it is not related to our garden Nasturtium whose name is Trapacolum majus. This plant's leaves and flowers arc edi ble and the seeds can be pickled as an inexpensive substitute for cap ers. Though totally unrelated they have similar names. Scientific names often lead us to interesting histories. A good example is our common yarrow. made famous by Granny dampen of the "Beverly Hillbillies" and found everywhere locally. The wild kind has white flowers and hybrids have pink, yellow or purple flowers, but they all have the same botanical name. They are called Achillea millefolium botan ically. Millefolium means thou sands of leaves and refers to their fern-like leaves. Achillea refers to the ancient Greek hero Achilles who used the leaves of this plant to slop the flow of blood in the wounds of his men at the battle of Troy. It is also known as "wound wort" which collaborates what was said earlier about the ending "wort." Studying plants is definitely interesting, but the confusion can be mind-boggling. Only eat what you can positively identify! Even Euell Gibbons agreed with this premise. We must, however, take care of our world, whether we agree on what to call it or not!
