THE COACH'S CORNER BY KEN JOHNSON KIDS WILL FIND A PLACE TO PLAY On the way to the Saturday Braves Club Mixer I was pleased to see about six kids playing on their i skate boards on the College's new asphah driveway behind the old cafeteria. They were really enjoying themselves and I said to myself they might have been run off a few years ago. But I hate to say kids faring that on themselves. They mess up with their gum wrappers, don't put things beck where they get diem and generally mala* a mess of things. This r ve noticed in the over 400 kids who have learned to swim in my pool. And then when we arrived at the Braves Club Mixer we sat next to Dr. Joe and Adrienne and I was so pleased when Dr. Joe said "I showed some kids how to walk on their hands." Can you imagine a Chan cellor doing that? And Adrienne said, "She was a diver." Can you imagine a Chancellor's wife diving? But the college is blessed with their young outlook and their interest in kids. I was also interested in what Dr. Oxendine said to the Board of Governors about testing. He said, "Kids are interested in how they can 4 do." They want you to look at them especially in swimming and show just what they can do. So testing can - be a game. But as I learned in a college hygiene couse where Coach Davis of Cortland State tested us every time the class met we were tested and that got you on the ball for studying. I noticed too when I visited ? the Pembroke Junior High how very objective the teacher was and I was so pleased I gave a penmanship writing test to the whole school administered by the teachers and the writing was so superior, far better than mine only six out of 300 were not so good. But again I want the readers to known when education is criticized that generalizations are unfair because mose and I might addd all schools have great teachers and great programs and all have some not so good. And remember just like kids finding their own play to play, the learned will learn in spite of anything if he wants to learn.
