PSU AGAIN SURPASSES ITS GOAL IN GIVING TO UNTIED WAY For the fourth straight year Pembroke State University has surpassed its goal of giving to Robeson County United Way. PSU has donated $2,935 in its campaign which ended in November. Its goal was $2,800. Coordinator of PSU's effort was again Monnie Sanderson, secretary in the PSU Office of Public Information. Because of her leadership, PSU has received past plaques from Robeson County United Way for "Outstanding Achievement" and being a "Pacesetter." PSU's giving has increased each year, being $1,705 in '86, $2,000 in '88, $2,765 in '89. and $2,935 this year. To dramatiaqj|s effort^'PSU has erected a United Way thermometer%^tW quadrangle of its campus so all could see the progress. When PSU went over the top in its giving, an over-the-top "spurt" was painted on the thermometer. Mrs. Sanderson was very pleased over this latest effort. "Because of the tight budget times, I didn't know if we would reach our goal, and I'm delighted that we surpassed it anyway," she said. BERNARD LOCK LEAR NAMED DIRECTOR OF PHYSICAL PLANT Bernard LockJear, a native of the Pembroke area who earned his B.S. in business admin is (ration at LaSalle University in Phila delphia with a major in operations management and labor relations, is the new PSU director of the physical plant In this capacity, he succeeds Horace Burnette. who retired Aug. 31 after 30 years at PSU. Iocklear has taken additional acade mic work at Penn State University and Lincoln Technical Institute. Since 1988. he has been director of Locklear plant operations and maintenance services for the Metropolitan School District in Nashville, Tenn. Prior to that, he was director of the physical plant and purchasing at Albright College in Reading, Ph. From 1960-84, he was employed by Temple University in Philadelphia from 1960-84, serving as superintendent of maintenance from 1978-84. For many years, Loddear has been a member of the Association of fttysical Plant Administrators. GERRY MELTON APPOINTED ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR HEALTH CAREERS Gerry Melton, a native of Lexington, has been named the new associate director for health careers at PSU. He will assist Jan ^ Lowery. Jf; Melton earned his B. A. in sociology and political science at PSU and his M.A.Ed, in counseling from East Carolina University. His previous positions have included being director of career development for 7Vt years at Richmond Community College and mental health counselor for the N.C. Department of Correction for seven years. Melton He is s member of both the N.C. and American associations for counseling for development PSU BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO MEET DEC. U The PSU Board of Trustees will meet at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Board Room of Sampson Hall. A luncheon for the trustees will be held at noon in the Chancellor's Dining Room prior to the meeting. DR. GIBSON GRAY HAS ANGIOPLASTY DURING THANKSGIVING Dr. Gibson Gray, 68, PSU professor of political science who retired last May after 19 years of service, had a traumatic Thanksgiving. ? He had chest problems on the Monday before Thanksgiving, was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of Southeastern General Hospital at Lumberton, and his temperature shot up to 104 because of a viral infection. He was taken by ambulance to Duke Medical Center and received a catherization whereby it was discovered his right auricle was 95 percent closed. He then received an angioplasty. Gibson, who had received a pacemaker in '86, returned home Nov. 26. Gibson was grand marshal of the '90 PSU commence ment. MT. AIRY BAPTIST CHURCH DONATES U58 TO RUTH MARTIN SCHOLARSHIP Prior to Thanksgiving, Mt_ Airy Baptist Church near Pembroke had a love offering for the Ruth Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund for the PSU Department of Philosophy and Religion. It raised $458. Miss Martin, who taught at PSU for 32 years, died on Dec. 28 of last year. McLEAN CHAIR PROFESSOR ATTENDS INTERNA HONAL MEETING Dr. Douglas Schell, PSU McLean Chair professor in the Department of Business Administration and Economics, recently attended an international meeting on entrepreneurship educators and researchers in St Louis, Mo. He participated in a committee studying entrepre neurship education opportunities for the nontraditional student Special attention was given to developing skills for members of minority groups, indndmg Native - Ameri-1 cans, helping immigrants make a good economic adjustment to American society, and assisting persons who desire to make career changes later in life. TURKISH GENERAL TO BE INTERVIEWED ON WPSU- TV The interview guest of WPSU-TVs half-hour program on Lumberton Cablevision's Channel 6 Thursday, Dec. 13, from 9:30-10 p.m. will be Lt. Gen. Gelal Arkbulat of the Turkish National Police. GENE LOCKLEAR ART EXHIBIT SCHEDULED IN PEMBROKE DEC. M Gene Locklear, famed Lumbee Indian artist, will have a special exhibit Saturday, Dec. 22, from 2-8 p.m. at the. Gene Locklear Art Gallery on Union Chapel Road in Pembroke. Part of the proceeds will go to the Gene Locklear Endowed Scholarsip in Art at Pembroke State University. Locklear recently had an ait exhibit at Duke University. His work there will also be on exhibit at PSU. He has also been commissioned to create a limited number of Christmas tree ornaments for the Neiman Marcus International Department Store chain.
