FACULTY AND STARR TO JOIN
CHANCELLOR'S CLUB
Dr. JoMxak DOnndine . ? TSU chancellor asks faculty,
administrators, and staff to consider joining the
Chancellor's Club.
by Gene Warren
At Pembroke State University's general faculty
meeting Monday as PSU prepared for the Christmas
holidays. Chancellor Joseph Oxendine gave his traditional
semester-ending update to the faculty-and also issued a
challenge to them, the administrators, and the PSU staff.
He proposed that they consider joining the Chancellor's
Club.
To belong to this exclusive club, one pledges to give
$1,000 a year to PSU for a period of 10 years. When
Oxendine became chancellor 1 '/> years ago, there were 43
Chancellor's Club members.
"We* re over 80 now with firm commitments raising the
number to 85," Oxendine told the faculty. He said he has

* goal of 100 Chancellor's Club members by the end of
this calendar year, meaning December 31.
"Practically all of this money goes to attract the best
scholars we can locate. Last year we gave $367 to
Chancellor's Scholars at PSU. This year we are providing
them $600 a year. Next year we want to pay for their full
tuition and fee.s meaning each Chancellor's Scholar will
receive $850-$900 a year," said Oxendine, who wants to
establish a More head Scholar-like program at PSU in the
future. At unc- Chapel Hill, that program pays for all of
the selected students' expenses.
At present PSU has 50 Chancellor's Scholars with about
16 more expected to join the program next fall.
"Benevolence or charity is a very personal, private
thing," said Oxendine. "I want to tell you this is a most
deserving, a most worthy charity to support your
University and the student scholars of your University.
"Perhaps you have neber been asked before-but I"m
asking you now to think seriously about personally
becoming a Chancellor's Club member. That's $83.33 a
month. And we have a special program in insurance
(whereby persons can join the Chancellor's Club) which
Liz Mclntyre (resource development officer of the PSU
Institutional Advancement Office) can help you with," he
said. Mrs. Mclntyre is in charge of the funding for the
Chancellor's Scholars Program.
Oxendine asked the faculty, which totals 164, "to think
seriously about joining the Chancellor's Club. We need
you. I can't think of a better place for your money to go. It
is important for Pembroke State University (which will be
making plans in the next year to enter a major capital fund
raising campaign).
"One of the convincing things to a major corporation or
foUrtdaOoe"fifto IwraWfc to say that we have a broad ku*
of support because they wttHte asking that question when
we ask for a half-million dollars. They want to know: What
kind of support do you have from your faculkty? What
kind of supprot from your alumni? And from your Board
of Trustees?"
Oxen dine said he spoke to the PSU Board of Trustees
about all members joining the Chancellor's Club when the
trustees met December 14. "I expect them to be a part of
this support system for the University," Onendine said.
"And I expect you to think about itr-and do it by
December 31.1 hate to lose on a goal I" ve set If one out of
eight of you does this, we'll go over 100."
In conclusion, in the spirit of giving at this holiday
season, the chancellor asked the faculty, the administra
tors and staff to think about becoming Chancellor's Club
members...and then make that commitment.
